First off, howdy all! Hope everyone is doing well and keeping safe!

Now, down to business. I'd really love to know how people out there that work with amp sims and live guitar go about recording and changing between amp sims.

My problem at the moment is purely the fact that I have no experience with changing between different amp sims, and the best way to record live guitar. We've recorded our current track in sections, and we've got three different plugin effects for the guitar tracks. I should mention that the tracks have been recorded twice to allow for double tracking, hard panning left and right. I've tried multiple different techniques, but I can't seem to find something that works without there being some kind of blip between patterns, or a bit of latency when bypassing one sim to the next.

I'm pretty certain that there's something that I'm missing, but I can't seem to figure out what it is that I'm doing wrong.

I've tried automating the sims to come off and on as needed, but random blips. I've tried splitting the guitar track to the respective parts where the sound should change, but that gives me blips and drops in effects changing from one to another.

Should I be crossfading? Should I get the guitarist to record the guitar as one whole track instead of in segments?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated!

Whenever I need to do this I copy the track replace the amp and then just automate the volume. or a quick fade up on one track and down on the other, and then delete the unwanted areas as needed. So each amp has its own track.

I've found the transition works for me, I don't know how the pros do it and I'm keen to find out.

DI box. Record with some headroom.
I record on different mono channels, with different plugins and modeling insances on each (if needed). I also like to double- or triple-track my guitars, usually in a LCR manner. Maybe channel 1-3 is the verse, 4-6 is the chorus, 7-9 is the bridge, etc.
    Maybe that helps.

@MarkyMW, yes! I see the flaw in what I've been doing now! Man, I've just recently started a new antidepressant which is really hardcore and left me feeling like a zombie. I can't quite focus properly, but that totally makes sense! And that is what I shall do! Thank you for that!

@Baxter, we use a a DI, and I record in the way that you've suggested. It was just my stupid head not being able to make sense of things. It's all clear now. Screw these new meds. I do not enjoy not being able to think clearly. Cheers for that though, dude!

@Tob, yeah, I should not be doing that. It's been kicking my CPU to nearly 100%. I'm using Neural DSP. Found that some of the Cory Wong ones have a huge CPU impact, despite my PC being pretty hardcore. I do have to ask though, what do you mean by not printing parts? Copy and paste?

I feel that it would have been best if I uploaded a screenprint of what I'm working with.

But yeah, I think I've got this now.

Thank you all for your input, suggestions and help!

Tell me about it...! I love that amp but it's a cpu killer! I use Reaper so I freeze the tracks and unfreeze to tinker. Just build up one track at a time.

Glad to hear its sorted
