so this is a question for those who start writings songs with chords..and lyrics

so you have all chords and lyrics now

how do you turn it into full production? lets say for edm

do you just jam over the chords to find melody patterns? or riffs? any particular way thanks

 

Yes. Sometimes I get melodies when I play the chords (or change/modulate the chords because the melody wants to go a certain way/length/etc). Sometimes I get chords when I imrovise melodies. Sometimes I get/hear both chords and melodies in my head, that I write down. There is no one way of doing it. Whatever works for you.

 

I take the chords and send them to multiple synths, duplicated onto other midi channels. I transpose one or two down to a bassline range (-24) and delete notes to have a basic bassline that matches the chords. etc. I send them to pads and rythymic/percussive synth patches. Maybe program an arpeggiator using the progression.

things like that.

 

Look at the chord progression you are going to use, then use an arpeggiator for patterns changes/different synths/basslines/vocals which will work! and not sound like plinky plonky shit!
