I actually hate the Beatles BUT the answers to the OP's questions are all there in the study of songwriting and music theory. It's not all unexplainable magic. Not at all. Read up on the musical theories behind harmony, voice leading, rhythm, orchestration etc - they all knew these things and used them as the basis for writing their music, plain and simple. Not that it's EASY really, but the info is totally all there. Why one chord goes into another, how the notes of the chords are stacked, what instrument gets what note, how to analyze music, etc

The music they grew up with was often even more complex and it's what informed them when making the music they became famous for. The tools are all there waiting for whoever wants to go looking. I mean this to be encouraging and 100% not condescending.

Like think about the stuff professional songwriters and composers know. The kind of folks that can bust out something crazy on the spot because they have the training. That's the knowlegde you gotta aim for to get there. It's how the Beatles did it. The professional writers are often not very cool, granted! In learning all the stuff they usually get stuffy and boring. That won't be you though right? :guru:

I hear what you are saying but you may wish to check that. John Lennon did not read music and knew little of music theory and neither did Paul McCartney but McCartney had perfect pitch. That's easy to find online and in academia. None of the Beatles went past an English school system education of the time. John Lennon failed all his O-level exams but was admitted to the Liverpool College of Art. None of The Beatles had any true formal music training and that is also documented.

George Martin, however, was classically trained. He had perfect pitch and taught himself piano as a boy. Later he went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music where he played the oboe. It was Martin who persuaded the Beatles to weave elements of classical composition into their music.

For me the biggest lesson to take from the Beatle's success is that when opportunity knocked they were already primed and seasoned musicians with a lot of songwriting and live experience under their belts. That's the essense of their success, including of course chemistry and personality - they had it all. Everything else was the icing on the cake. George Martin was also very important of course, he added sophistication and orchestration. And the studio engineers who were themselves exceptional, such as a young Alan Parsons. Everything was right for them, including the era when they came through. When you listen to the Beatles you hear all of that and it's why I think the songs are so memorable, it's something more than just the song and performance.

For The Beatles it's Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Monkees, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, The Kinks

For Nirvana it's Melvins, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots. Posting Courtneys dirty Hole felt wrong because I think Cobain wrote or co-wrote her music anyways lol

"we couldn't record our songs while writing at home,
also, we were unable to write music and melodies,
that's why we have made only songs we were able to remember the day after..."

    So easy, so Beatles.

Culture and how many it was culture for at the time. Seriously I grew up with my dad playing beatles when I was a baby. I know almost every word to every beatles song but couldn't tell you what 90% of those songs are just ingrained.

Point is Beatles werent that great, but it was the culture at the time and how that culture evolved current culture. It's like the Doors, Most Doors song SUCK ASS. Don't get me wrong I like the Doors and some more of the rarer songs, but honestly sometime tried that crap style now they'd be laughed at. It's all about the culture when they came out.

So it has nothing to do with the music it's the culture it came out in and what society felt they needed it for at the time

It's funny how some people are trying to explain or justify Beatles being """"better"""" than [whatever you put here] using music theory. It's like explaining why people like ice cream writing an ice cream recipe.

I thought you were more talking bands that were less known and had flown under the radar. All those bands in the Beatle category made oodles of cash with multi gold records...except of course poor Badfinger which were totally ass raped, swindled by their turd of a manager and found two of the band commiting suicide (I think it was two), other than that....Who is Bob Dylan? The Monkees were also great but they didn't write their buggest songs if I remember correctly. I still listen to them...Mickey is a magnificent singer.

I think that Soundgarden was there at the level of artistic creativity as Nirvana and made a shitload of money thiugh Nirvana still raked it in. I love Sonic Youth and STP to pieces but don't think they were quite as consistent and for sure didn'tbring in as much cash. Courtney fucked iver Nirvana so fuck her. All of Nirvana and Soundgardens songs were fantastic, not so much as with the other bands in the grouping though in my opinion.

But nobody, not even Dylan who is arguably one if the all time greatest singwriters as his lyrical content is superlative (as well as his delivery if lines), can compete with the four from Liverpool's overall musicality and library of amazing albums. Dylan is worth a fortune.

Music was so memorable because that is the Era when you were in your prime listening to that music... 9 times outta 10 the music that sticks with people are the songs you heard with friends laughing over a camp fire or out at your first club.. people always say that there Era of music was the best .. and the next Era is horrible garbage.. maybe your lucky and liked the next 2 styles that came after your first but at some point everyone goes this music sucks that's on the radio right now lol

The Beatles are great because they wrote songs that represent everyone's melodies. (even my grandmother liked their songs!)
They were simple people with a GREAT sensitivity and very honest. They were a true 4 piece band, but ...
The biggest driver of the band was always Paul, even after they broke up. This guy has melodies under his skin. The other 3 were also talented musicians, but music was not their first priority in their lives.
    Just my 2 cents.

That was a Ringo song. Another that he wrote, Act Naturally, was on the Beatles "Help" album and which was recorded by Buck Owens and went to #1 on the country charts.

But I mean they were not as big as poster boy bands like these two which set a whole new level to popularity and success.
There probably was those local bands too like Killing Joke which Nirvana supposedly stole the Come As You Are riff from but they didn't sue because they stole the riff Nirvana stole from another band so it was all water under the bridge hahaha

When they confronted Nirvana they said "never heard of ya, sorry" hahah but Killing Joke has a postcard Nirvana sent them hahaha

Hahaha well maybe Bob Dylan wasn't the best example. But you said 5 examples each so that made me nervous haha

Yeah I don't even mean to take away from the music because it's all there no matter if it was a thought out project carefully selected or it was just 4 spontaneous band mates. I recently learned Andrew WK was a plant but it didn't take away from the music for me either way.

Hey that's my wife! I am the Walrus when I'm on top of her.

Music died exactly when people found alternative ways to music to destroy it. We're trying to revive it, but it's not possible. I'm not saying that out of ignorance. Music is dead and even its ashes have faded. No one, not even the strongest artificial intelligences, can revive it. We have to accept this bitter truth and mourn its death for the rest of our lives.

If you don't have a black dress for mourning, I can give each of you 2 meters of cloth to sew a black dress.
