What is "better" and what is "worse" in Audio?

The following message said "Why even bother with Peavey Revalver when there is Neural DSP, STL, etc which is far better!"

So, now just because a bunch of nerds say that "HEY BRO, NEURAL DSP IS THE BEST SHIT IN THE WORLD" so everyone follows this trend?
We all know that what matters the most in amp simulation is what works for YOU, not what everyone says its best or worst.

Revalver is underappreciated, i have yet to find an amp suite with the same dynamics and true to life sound in VST amps.
What everyone likes about STL, Neural, and that stuff is that the sound coming from it is modern-ish, that is the trend today, its not the RAW amp sound, its been processed to sound good out of the box, and with this i mean that the provided cabinets in Neural for example, sounds good with that amp as soon as you play a couple strings.

    With this said, FUCK TRENDS.

I totally agree. I'm always for "if it sounds good, it is good". Except when it comes to loudness war. I would really like everybody to adhere to -9dB LUFS at the most. Why not play with the infinite dB room we have at our disposal? Shock people. Give them low loudness audio at the beginning, then kill their ears when the chorus comes. Stuff like that. Dynamics is the essence of music, because you can deploy feelings that way, just in real way. You shout when you want to make your message more important, right?

Now when you're only listening to everybody shouting, you just want to get away from it. Right?

My opinion, with audio there might be guidelines but there are no rules. Let your ears be the judge.

The thing is, I find it sometimes amusing when people ask "what is the best X?" or "what is the most realistic Y?" because there is no simple answer, and there are definitely no objective answers.

With audio production we have thrown "realism" out of the window since the dawn of multitracking.

Let others bicker about such things and use what you want.

Totally, man! Also very true about the dynamics being the essence of music.

Hell yes, i also like the provided impulses, they are true to life, like a real mic´ed cab with no post processing whatsoever.
I feel like impulses like Ownhammer, Sigma, etc, post process their IRs to sound more "clean". In Revalver you get the raw cab and nothing else.

Revalver, probably not much worse than Guitar Rig 5..

    However technology Advances,
and that's what makes ppl like the Nembrini/Neural stuff..

They're simply a little step forward, an improvement of what was previously possible.
But that doesn't make it automatically better for what you're doing, or perfect for your particular taste..

    Tools are tools,
if you like how a tool works, and the result it gives you.. well just use that!

For instance I'm still quite fond of what old multifx units sounded like for Live situations,
shit like the typical Boss GT 6-10, VoxTonelab or Korg AX3000..

I would probably Not use it to record, unless I was using a proper Real Amp and Cabsim,
but for a Live FX unit I will much prefer them over any Modeller or VST..

They might be old, but they're better tools for that, that's what they were designed for..
Modellers are more for Recording, IMO

I am the final and ultimate arbiter of everything and anything...from what the best sounding vsti, plugin or DAW is to who is the best musician, artist, sculptor or any other question that you might curiously ponder to know, I'll even go as far as to let you in on which is the best restaurant in your neighborhood for lets say, falafel or even spring rolls. You are young and have not yet the experience to come to your own conclusion on any subject. I can and will do this for you, and all you need do is ask nicely because I am a generous fellow and would like to help you along your path, pilgrim.

You are honored, I am humbled by your honor.

Hahaha man, cant even compare Guitar Rig with Revalver, have you even tried Revalver and its dynamics? how it reacts to your playing? how good the stock impulses sound (like a real cabinet with all its flaws). I have Guitar Rig and the only use for it is the effects, the pitch shifter in it is very good too.

And yeah, those modelers are good for live performances for sure. However, if you know what you are doing, you can even use a POD 2.0 with some impulses and get a good sound too.

    lol

Exactly, that it is, its just a dumb trend. Just because its the last thing to come out, it doesnt meant its the best thing... That is why TSE X50 is still the best 5150 emulation out there.

I tried Revalver and didn't like it,
it felt kinda like an imitation/variation of Guitar Rig..
but I don't like Guitar Rig 5 either :bleh:

I'd say Amplitube 4 is much better, specially for the Cabs..
    (Also S-Gear is interesting.. )

But in terms of realism, it doesn't come close to some of the Nembrini (Bogner, Marshall BT, Soldano?), Neural and even Brainworx stuff..
(in some cases ofc, it varies from amp to amp..)

As for the Pod, I've got here an HD500 and I'm telling you,
I see this more like a Recording tool, and it would be a PITA to adjust it for live use.

Whereas for Live I'd take an Amp + VoxTonelab/Boss GT6-10 any day over the Pod..
Much more straightforward and immediate result, no complication.

Granted, Pod 2's are much more simple units,
so it wouldn't need to be as tweaked as much as the HD500..

But it's old AF, and sounds like garbage for today's standards :bleh:
So I will not take it to a Gig..

The only way I would use a POD live is the same way I'd use the Boss/Vox/Korg,
an that's = as a FX unit with the amps/cabs Bypassed.

For that any Floor Pod, Pod XT, Pod X3 etc.. will suffice.
But it kinda misses the point of having a modeller in the first place.

The ability to distinguish a kerfuffle from a felafel is a priceless social skill and would save me many hours of clean-up duties at restaurants & dinner parties...
@Lois Lane - please teach this messy mortal the way of the kerfelafel :beg:

Yeah bro, i understand you, it took me a while to get to like Revalver, Guitar Rig is only good for its effects like i say.
Amplitube 4 cabs are really good you say? I thought they werent so good, but maybe i need to revisit it once again, how its Amplitube 5 by the way? have you tried it?

Ohh the POD HD500, i love that unit, the sounds i heard from it are just what i want in a modeller, of course its digital as fuck haha, but that is more or less a sound that i like and would fit easily in a mix.

I dont know about the Boss you talk about, might check it out sometime. I had a friend who used a Boss pedal back then and he was getting really good tones out of it too.

Yeah, the POD is much simpler, i had the 2.0, but hated it, the fact i couldnt put a tube screamer with my own settings on it made it worse (i know there is a hidden function to make the screamer available)
The cabs on that thing were goddamn awful though lol

The Boss GT6-10/Vox Tonelab/Korg AX300G, or even Digitech RP or Zoom G8?..

It's all "old school" stuff, just how we made things in the late 90's/early 00's..
Then Pods came along and started the modeller trend.

Granted Boss and Korg units also had some early modelling and cab stuff,
but it was very limited and horrible in comparison..

"The cabs on that thing were goddamn awful though lol"

Right, that's exactly one of the major culprits,
and it's also true for the HD500 for the most part..

It's usable, but it cannot compare to a proper Cabsim/IR,
that's why I usually disable the cabs on the Pod, and use external IRs or Amplitube Cabs with it

Yeah sadly i didnt tried any of them, i would love to, but living in my country its really hard to get this stuff... I got the POD 2.0 some months ago just because God knows why haha. I ended selling it and bought a audio interface since i wont do lives anyway.

Totally, old school is something i really like, there is a certain character in those modellers too, that is why i like old stuff too.

So, seems you have lots of experiences with cabs, and you say that Amplitube cabs are really that good... interesting!
I will check it out, but last time i compared A4 cabs against impulses, it lacked "depth" but they were easier to put in the mix.
