I always have my main EQ on the master, and after the EQ Limiter No6. Mainly to avoid clipping etc while producing, I always manage to get Limiter No6 do exactly nothing when Im finished with a track. But sometimes its kind of a hunt searching what is to loud. I can use the EQ with its analyzer, too see if any section is way to loud. I can use my ear and the limiter to see/hear when the limiter is active.
But it would be a lot easier if I would have something to see which frequencys are to loud. Than I could just look which instruments play in that section and manage to... you know, mix. Cant think of a proper english sentence right know.

Im sure theres something like that. Or a similar funtction build in in a EQ, or Limiter, or whatever.

 

Its a common mixing problem, which instrument is causing the clipping? My solution is to not worry about this in the project but once I am done arranging/composing, I analyze the waveform of the final render. From there I identify problem areas which can be cured right there (uncompressed snare drum) by a limiter or identify the problem track and I apply limiter to it.

 

If you're looking to find a plugin "that shows which frequencys are to loud" your current workflow is fine: you have a VST which displays a spectrum, and you can EQ bands down if they are too loud.

If you're looking to EQ down bands of particular instruments and want to know which instruments, you want to go with a multi FFT analyzer. Like:

Insert http://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/Product_FreqAnalystMulti/ on all the tracks u want 2 analyze, configure the routing and colours, and go.

Or , using Izotope Ozone 5 adv, Insert meter taps on all the tracks u want 2 analyze, name the taps, insert Ozone 5 on the master , open meter bridge , maximize the spectrum, and configure your taps (I think that's how it works but I can't get it working here.)

Hi Someone, when you say "something to see which frequencies are too loud" The question is what is too loud?
In mastering, depending of the objective formats, the "too loud" significance may change.
For instance, you don't mix as loud for CD than for DVD than for MP3 etc...
This is why you will not find a serious plugin that pretend to tell you what is too loud. But many of them will have presets including the different formats, that will give you a good start point.
But as users up here explained perfectly, there are very good analysts plugins. All the mentioned here are very good.

What DAW are you using?

 

With too loud I mean over the 0 dB line...

Its about mixing for me, I dont master (yet?)

You'r using FL Studio, that explain better your problem.
Many DAWs today, include analysis tools, but not fl studio. So you should use the ones mentioned before,Blue cat audio, and so.
There are a lot of them any way, but if you want something serious choose those which relies on standard metering. Like the Izotope plugins.
