Because they can detect that. And if, as is likely, the email address, password and IP address (or address range) all change at a similar time it is likely that it's a different person running the software from a different place. And that's just a basic check. Maybe they record the "signature" of your computer too. Image-Line are a company who actively pursue these things. I guess because they need to protect that lifetime free update thing.

I've said this multiple times in the thread...I will assume the risk because I'm not even using it anymore. If it gets banned, I will send the buyer their money back. I've said this MULTIPLE times. If you don't trust me then IDK how to help you, but that's completely different from screwing someone by selling them something with false hope. As I've said I'm trying to make a really good deal that works for whoever wants it.

now that you mention it, this is actually a really really good point. full ownership would imply that the whole product is yours to do with as you please and would make piracy legal

 

After I registered the software, I had to pay something like another $39 for free lifetime updates. So with the initial product I didn't have free updates for life, but I still couldn't sell it on.

 

That's exactly what I did. I gave him my account. It was when he changed the email address that they blocked him. I also got a bollocking from Ebay as Imageline had contacted them too. Made me feel like a criminal ffs. No wonder people use cracked software, fuck them!

Ah ok, I see. Anyway, it's done now. It put the buyer off getting it now so they lost any future upgrade opportunities. Anyway, now it's been cracked and sales drop off the only updates they'll be working on will be the protection!

 

something occured to me, a while back when i started using a vpn and tried to login to my account at pluginboutique it got temporarely blocked and i wasnt able to buy anything and it really annoyed me. they apologized and before they explained why i figured out why this had happened: for my own protection against hackers and such, because i logged in from a different ip-adress originating from a different part of the world. it could be that IL registers several unique ID's from their users and their systems, and if one of them changes it's prolly no problem but when everything changes it's easy to assume that it's not the original buyer who's logging in. but i could be overthinking it. although the fact that they also look at where you're coming from websitewise, how else could they know about selling it on ebay. ok they are quite active in searching every corner of the web, like how they found a guy on youtube making tutorials and told the guy "hey we dont have a user by that name in our database" since it shows the registered name in the status bar thingie

ok ummm... you don't really think this is the first time it's been cracked right? FL Studio or Fruity Loops has been around for over 20 years and i think it was at version 3.5 when i was first able to try it out.

 

You're buying a license.
And, even if you buy it from a retailer, you'll still have to accept the terms in order to activate your license code on IL's website. You can then not activate it and return it.
That's how software works.

That's not "lifetime free upgrades". Logic Pro X upgrade wasn't free. That was 8 years ago. Not 15, not 20.
Their policy of free upgrades is for operating systems, but they never promised it for apps. Even if they release Logic Pro 11 for free, so far, they haven't said anything about this.
And, again, you can't resell it anyways, so...

You're legally allowed to sell the regkey file with the installer (as long as you delete it from your computer and stop using it, btw, how do you even prove this?). But the developer may end that account and the new buyer will stop receiving new updates. The old keyfile should keep working.

You have the right to sell it/buy it, but you don't have the right to receive new updates.

 

That is indeed a good point.
But I think it depends on the form in which the license was originally granted.
If it can be concluded that an essential part of the sold license was the lifetime updates, I can imagine that in the further development of the law created by the EU in this regard, it will be decided that the manufacturer must provide updates free of charge.

I would rather see a problem in the wording "lifetime", because it would be possible to pass on the license so that the right to update would last forever...
On the other hand, if the licensee dies one week after buying the license, isn't e.g. his wife entitled to use the software any longer?

I can imagine that many more generations of lawyers will be able to earn their living with questions about software licenses.

 

another reason illegal selling is worse than pirating is that a pirate is a potential future customer if he/she decides they like it enough and use it enough to buy it. someone who buys illegal software is not likely to want to pay for it again.

 

Assuming tragedy of the commons, Selling a purchased license is better. Assuming a different philosophy, you are right more often. It's hard to prove who is closer to the truth without data. I will still argue that it's not that damaging and people rarely do what I'm trying to do while many more people pirate without ever buying. We choose to toe the line in different ways, but I respect your perspective.

Very Good post. The word licenses means you acquire a right of use, buying the Software is possible but you have to buy the Company in that Case Image Line or buy the whole Software out of the Company.

Image-Line is made of some very good guys. Always there to help. The software comes with lifetime free updates at 200 dollars, while companies like Avid sucking as much as can.
