Reaper will do this also. It can also use smart folders for plugins. If I make a smart folder named EQ for example, every plugin with Eq in its name will be in that folder, including every eq I install after that.

A few of my smart folders are "comp" "gate" "drum" "Waves", yes it works with manufactures too. I even have a "everything except Waves" smart folder.

It has nothing to do with where the plugin is on the system, just how you access them.

    As does Logic Pro.
No, I don't want to show my 20 GB+ of plugins. It's embarassing!

EDIT: Not working after latest win10 updates, so i've tested it with the few older dll's from dll-files.com and voila! It's working now. YMMV.

@Xupito think i can be of help, i managed to finally make a vst lister without juce. Also the fst files can be easily sorted if they contain vendor name inside them, else if they contain the dll path, then the vst lister can be used to get plugin vendor name and create folders automatically. Its not much code can be done in a day maybe. Only problem is the vst lister cannot scan vst2 shells rn. Am also working on a python library to read and edit flp files, that will work for fst also Not only vendor, but categorizing wrt 32/64 bit, plugin category, vst2/3 is also possible

Ableton? What does it do? It doesn’t sort the plugins. Unless the installers do that DAW doesn’t do it.

    i put plugins into folders:
FX and Synth and there sort by Vendor. Scan with Ableton and then its sorted by Vendor too. Simple as it gets.

any subdirectories you create and put them into like that, changes how they show up in the menu. that's nice so you can lower the number of items displayed every time you click it, and better organized. but have you had this cause any problems with any file/preset locations?

In Ableton this works for me with VST2.x but unfortunately not with VST3. In the VST3 folder the sub-folders get the names from somewhere (probably registry or some db). I have Native Instruments and then Native Instruments GmbH just for the Super 8 synth..

Not a big deal, sort of annoying. Any ideas? :dunno:

Checked - all NI VST3s get installed in the root of Program Files > Common Files > VST3.. and yet they are in different folders under Ableton VST3
