Win 10 LTSB no longer relevant for DAW?

    Hello,
I have read all posts on optimizing Windows and systems for DAW. I notice that lately it is recommended to use Win 10 Pro. I am on LTSB 2015 and have had no issues until recently with Ableton and Studio One requiring a higher build than I'm on.

What would be the easiest route for me to upgrade given the unique nature of LTSB? I assume I have to do a clean install no matter what. And are there really some good improvements that will also benefit a DAW with the more recent Windows builds?

I use the Windows 10 Pro Ghost Spectre version personally. Very light weight, it's an unofficial build but not illegal / cracked. Your license will work with it.

To upgrade an LTSB/LTSC build to a newer version of LTSB/LTSC, you'll have to re-format and re-install.

I would suggest upgrading your outdated LTSB to Windows 10 ENTERPRISE if you don't want to reinstall all of your programs and plugins.

Download the Enterprise ISO, and while you're booted into your LTSB Windows, click the 'setup.exe'. Choose the option to "keep your files and data." - all of your s*** will still work. No loss of VST registrations, etc.

The new version of LTSC is comin' 'round the corner and it will have the FLS slot upgrade among others.

    Recommend a {Gen2} release.

    Interesting thread, thanks
I hadnt realised LTSC couldnt be upgraded.

Team-OS seems to be the place
    Is it torrents only?
The-eye has isos, but they look old and not light versions.
I see gen2 about. Is that light?
    Is win 10 enterprise bloated??

I personally struggle working out which win10 version and from where

Most likely because the latest LTSC (1809) is quite old by now and not supported by some recent software and driver versions, let alone the even older LTSB.
The next long term support version will be released later this year as 21H2, apparently:

Yeah, I worry about the changes that the source code might carry in these 'modified' versions. Has anyone heard of ransomware or virus related issues with these modified versions of Windows?

No. If you get it from TeamOS website. They check those releases for malware and viruses. It's kinda like AZ for Windows OSes. I use their releases all the time and never had any problems.

TeamOS releases are usually not stripped of anything, as well as {gen2} versions. You can always read about what's been added or cut out in the first post. Ghostspectre releases are lite and quite modified, but I personally haven't found any problems with them. All the releases come with the latest [for the particular release - look at the date of release] Windows updates already applied, as far as I know, so it's usually better to go with the latest release.

Pro version has less bloat [things you will never use, and additional services you won't need] than Enterprise, but anything but Enterprise, LTSB, LTSC versions are able to disable some things, Windows update among the most annoying.

There is probably a way to disable Windows Update in Pro, but I have no experience with it, yet. Hopefully someone with Windows 10 Pro experience will chime in. I'd like to know that myself.

    Cheers!

"TeamOS releases are usually not stripped of anything"

But most releases on that site are arent they?

How would you rate the lite versions on there by others?

For clarification when you say Windows 10 Enterprise, you are referring to LTSC edition correct? I have not found Enterprise as a standalone version of Windows

Where are the official Enterprise ISO files located? I have checked the MDL forum and they only have the 2019 LTSC Enterprise edition. This would be the latest correct?

Someone from our community should make a stripped light version of win 10 optimized for daws and post it on the sister site.

I suspect the TeamOS stripped down versions for gamers would be close to optimised for Audioz?

LTSC from gen2 has worked flawlessly for me so far. Only hiccup was sonarworks erroring while installing mysteriously until I ran internet explorer once (I have no idea why) when I was setting up my new PC, as I wasn't planning on ever connecting it to the internet, but after trying absolutely everything else, that was what fixed it. Not sure if that's specific to LTSC or not.

Curious about differences between enterprise/LTSC and Pro, has anyone used both or is aware of the differences that could comment on pros/cons?

Ha ha no. It's just the name of the person who creates these optimised versions of windows. There's plenty of discussion around it on the net, no one has had any bad experiences so far as I know.

I gone the other way ;: install pro WIN 10 and disable everything i dont need
It takes more time BUT you get less troubles with "up to date" softwares

As a side note, win 7 is dead. Most programs will not even install now ...

I know of the modifications that disable Windows Update... but the enterprise version only has a 90 day license... how do you disable talking to the windows server for license info?
