So you personally don't care about aesthetics of your DAW, yet you find time to litter a thread about DAW aesthetics. Unbelievable waste of time.

My monitors are tools. My headphones are tools. My controllers are tools. So is my phone, my car etc. Yet, their manufaturers pay a lot of attention to how their prodcuts (the TOOLS they sell) look. Same we, the users (at least most of us) also pay at least a bit of attention to the aesthetics of all the tools we use, because this is our environment.

    My votes:

    The ugliest:
    - Reaper (default skin)
    - Pro Tools

    Most pleasing:
    - Ableton Live
    - Studio One v2 - 2.6, but not newer versions
    - Reaper (custom skinned)

All others fall somewhat in between in my opinion. :)

I agree, plus a DAW is there for creation, I personally would rather sit in front of a screen that makes me feel more inspired than feel like it’s a chore over a period of time. Sure it’s all opinion and psychological but what isn’t.

Same reason I place the looks of my guitars on equal
Importance with sound and playability, because it makes me want to pick it up and play it more.

It all matters to a degree.

I am testing reaper now. What i dont like is how unintuitive is compared to cubase, s1 or pro tools. I am no noob yet i had to look up how to route tracks to groups on youtube because its just not as easy as it should be.
There are many more things that are a mess, i will get trough this but it should have been made a lot easier.
These are fundamental issues that should be taken care of, if Cockos does that then they will really have a daw that could compete with any daw out there.

Yup, the problem with Reaper is it lacks a good, clean default GUI. The stock one is not only ugly, but also not very ergonomic.
It took me a lot of time to build my own skin and config, but now it is a pleasure to work with.
Groups can be done either as tracks in folders (look at the example below: track 3 is receiving audio from tracks 4, 5 and 6) or by using sends (in the example below: tracks 7 and 9 are sent to bus /track 10/ and they don't go directly to master).
If a GUI is clean, routing in Reaper is very easy and understandable. (In my GUI everything is color coded. Green means a track is receiving from other track(s), warm yellow/orange means a track is sending to another channel.)

nothing even comes close to Logic Pro design vise, it's the best looking daw in my opinion. every little detail looks amazing. Pro Tools looks good, you can work there for hours without getting your eyes bleeding. Ableton and Reaper looks horrible.

Ok, after some more testing i have to say i like it a lot more now.
Routing is simple but could be implemented in more ways, mixer should be less limited so you could use it without any additional clicking and using shortcuts, but i get its a different daw.
I like how fast it renders tracks compared to cubase.
How do you add the editing toolbar that you have on top, scissors etc?

You need to switch on an additional toolbar ("Toolbar 1"), set its postion to "At the top of main window" and customize it by adding desired actions one by one (a special window will appear). There are literally thousands of possible actions (and the toolbar can be very big, if you desire). I just wanted mine to look a bit like Cubase or Studio One, because I'm used to them.

Now i have two same toolbars one on the top left and one on top of main window, how do i get rid of the left one or top one, whatever i choose the top main one doesnt disappear.
Otherwise i have now figured most main things from routing, recording, rendering, cutting, plugins bypassing, etc, its cool, i like it.
Its more raw but definitely cooler than i imagined, i can see it can be very hand for recording stuff on the field with a laptop.
I like how light and fast it is, smokes cubase in many areas, i think the engine is unrivaled regarding the efficiency and speed.
You can tell how much bloat is in the cubase code.

The left upper corner toolbar should be always present, as it is "part of Reaper's design" and contains some vital functions as snap, metronome etc.

If I could suggest something: You can instal another instance of Reaper as portable (Reaper installer asks you if you want it at the very beginning). This way you can have another Reaper on your computer, absolutely independent from the one you use now. I could send you my config, which contains updated skin, toolbars, actions, key shortcuts and changed behavior (e.g. mouse wheel is used for vertical scroll by default, not for horizontal zooming). Then you could "reverse engineer" my config and learn from it what can be done with Reaper.

Reaper for writing, overall production, arrangement, editing, mixing, mastering.
FL Studio for simplicity of drum beats writing, piano roll for pitching samples and couple of other things.
RX for overall restoration audio, editing, cleaning, SRC (or other high quality ones), dithering, some mastering tasks.

I used to use FL Studio for quite a while and still used to mess with it after I started to use Reaper but now that I'm with Reaper for a good time I just don't see the point of using FL anymore, I even uninstalled it. The only workflow I'm yet to make it perfect for Reaper is the clip view from Live. Apart from that Reaper is just a fucking Operational System.

Aesthetically only, every vst instrument and plugin from your vst paths, in Reason 12 can be identified via a clear image of what it looks like instead of scrolling - drag ' n drop to use. It doesn't take long to do it if ease of use and easy on the eye is desired. Reason seems to accept and use and like every vst with very few exceptions and I am talking less than 1%. It even reads every other DAW's vst's. Saves a shitload of time and is nice to look at

if anyone with Reason wants to know how, PM me.
