With a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 (routes the audio from audio out of VCV to Asio stream) Bitwig (Ableton Link) and the VCV module Stellare Link v2 (Ableton Link) no problem!

 

...and $teinberg the whale is never free. By chance, if Studio Edition is VST 2.4, I'll consider it seriously. Otherwise I'll stay on standalone without VST (I don't want "VST3 only").

 

sure, with virtual audio drivers or systems like rewire you can often find a way how to make a technically working connection.

the third alternative is that they make a VST plug-in for you which cares about this kind of connection - and if it is only midi out and audio in.

koblo started like that, absynth started like that, and with rewire 1 and an midi iac bus you could even run protools together with cubase 25 years ago.

but in my experience it is not so nice to actually work with such a system. *)

everything which means using two apps at the same time - or two computers - causes some kind of shizophrenia in your head: as soon as you have built up "steinberg system link", distributed processing, render servers, running an external executable as VST plug-in, a rewire compound, it suddenly is no longer fun... despite all the anticipation.

for many of us, today it is even "difficult" to work with hardware synths and a DAW at the same time, if you know what i mean.

the strategy for the advanced max user is to leave the DAW you used to use, and build your own DAWs in max. kontakt might not work, and you can not record 500 channels at once since it is so ineffective, but otherwise it will do exactly what you want.

*) maybe VCV or other vast synths or editors are the exception? maybe one should run them on a dedicated machine, placed somewhere else in the room, and use it as stadanlone synthesizer and record it over the analog desk? i do that sometimes using a bunch of mac minis, for both my favorite commercial softsyths or custom max patches.

Granted I only have the 0-coast, but I've never had a problem using it with Live or Bitwig.

 

The VST version has never been free. I suppose the studio version is another alias for the vst-based version.

which one exactly ? I don't know much about it. Just been playing with the standalone version, I thought the only VST version is the VeeSeeVST, open source.

 

That's right. There has never been an official vst release yet.

It is my bad, you are completely right. I just thought that VCV's host function was to use it as a VST.
