Also tried it many years ago, seemed like a proprietary prison or cage compared to the freedom of VST.

 

It does compare also having Cubase, but the approach is different the way it works. It is a modular system connected by virtual cables, much like we all used to last century and with your mouse you can patch them in any way you want (drag 'n drop) - with or without FX in the synth chain instead of the DAW chain/inserts/buses. Basic screenshot - So you choose your routing - you are not set hard and fast to the DAW constraints - You can do it to your own imagination. As for the synths, they're as good as any. Yes I like pigments too.

 

It's probably worth mentioning that it loads all the VST's too
It has only one catch - you have to know where your patches for the VSTi synth are.
It basically treats them like a rack-mount synthesiser/keyboard. You can also automate MIDI cc controllers like anything else, including the rear control knobs.
You cannot compare it to VST because it's not that limited, though it has its own uniqueness in limitations. It controls VST not the other way around.
It's not a plugin, it's a control centre.

It's outside-of-the-box clever.
It always used to be a Control centre that you ran in parallel as a slave with your DAW via Rewire.
Imagine a building with multiple rooms and that is Reason sort of like the unlimited rooms in the keymaker scene in The Matrix.. Propellerheads then with Reason 11+12 took the control centre and put it into a room by making the control centre function like a plugin and be called by any DAW and removing rewire. Theoretically, they put a skyscraper into a bedroom.

 

that's the whole point, it forces you to think different about making sounds.
it does some things better and some things equally good (or bad (that's up to you)
and with things like combinators, + reason as a plugin, it is even easier to compose at your leisure.
the prodigy and beastie boys are big fans

 

May have to sink some time into it then and see if I can surprise myself

 

Incidentally, the so-called "bad format" error occurs when there are broken / incomplete files (ie .rpcp / .rfl)

You can replicate it by moving a (large) .rfl file from the default location, copying it back while loading Reason, so it's incomplete. Likely an extraction or other error? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have not used Reason since version 3, now I will install the R2R version, I am not sure what it has become but I believe that BaSsDuDe is right: "Theoretically, they put a skyscraper into a bedroom", but i can be wrong. In view of a modular system, some tools such as Splitter, Merge, Mixer or various routing tools, and again Chorder, Arpeggiator, scaler and various players, and the like are essential, many of these are available as free Rack Extensions but to download them you need an account and a legit version of Reason, or the necessary ones are already integrated in the basic R2R version?

 

Everything we all compose no matter how simple or complex comes from our imagination.
No product is all things to all people and Reason is no exception. In saying that, it was designed to attempt to let any style of music composer to let their mind, creativity and imagination run free.
I have found accurately that in everything I have done in my life, whether music or people/relationships or adventure, whatever time I invest into it, returns the same in one way or another. Even if it turns out a person finds that it is not for them, if they invest some time into attempting to learn something new, that is probably what they will get out of it, even if that is they do not like it but found another way to do something they had not thought of before.

NOTE - The downloadable ones that are not free may or may not work. I have found in situations like this, that it is better to err on the side of caution.
