Hello. I recently had to give my friend back his Presonus AudioBox 44VSL and I replaced it with the cheaper Presonus USB 96. I had no problems at all with the 44 VSL, but the USB 96 constantly is making popping sounds (similar to what it sounds like when you set the buffer too low while trying to get the ideal latency setting, but that isn't the problem because I could use the highest buffer number and it still occurs the same amount). Anything with much bass or treble and sometimes even mid-range frequencies seem to do it. It sounds just like a blown speaker, but my speakers aren't blown.

When I first got it I did run the line out of a Fender Mustang GT Amp into one of the inputs and I have read where that both is and isn't good to do. So I am hoping that I didn't blow something (like a preamp) out.

The only other thing I can think of is the 44VSL was externally powered while the USB96 uses the USB power and perhaps it isn't getting the juice it needs?

It's darn frustrating though because it's basically unusable. My heroin intake has spiked since this started occurring and that is no good! But what do they expect? I am a sensitive artist! Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.

P.S. One more thing...in the Universal Control program where you adjust the Sample Rate and Buffer Size has the Input Format and Output Format columns greyed out at 2ch/24bit and I cannot change them. When I go into the Windows Sound Panel I can change the bitrate to 16 or 24 or any of the other options, but it stays at 24bit in the Universal Control. Could that be a symptom of something?

Changes to the bit depth latency etc are always made in the software of your audio interface, which DAW do you use? Leave all settings in Windows as they are.

Can you take one or more screenshots of your settings?
More detailed information on the latency, for example 256/512, would be useful.

It is possible that you have destroyed your interface with the line out!
If you have a DI output you can use that! Wich Fender Mustang GT Amp - 40 / 100 / 200 ? The 100 have a XLR Out.

Do you still have a guarantee?

USB CONNECTIVITY The Mustang GT rear panel features a USB audio port for recording. Using a micro USB cable (not included), connect a computer with recording software to this port. No external driver is needed to connect to an Apple computer. To connect to a Windows-based computer, the user must download the ASIO driver setup with Fender Mustang device, available at www.fender.com/support/articles/fender-universal-asio-drive. Note that USB audio and Bluetooth audio streaming (page 31) can not be used simultaneously

( Note: Line out for live recording and mixer )
LINE OUT AND FX SEND/RETURN Mustang GT amplifiers feature rear-panel balanced line output jacks (right and left) for connection to external recording and sound reinforcement equipment (see illustration below).

    Universal Control (Windows)
    Sample Rate.
    Changes the sample rate.
You can set the sample rate to 44.1, 48, 88.2, or 96 kHz. A higher sample rate will increase the fidelity of the recording but will increase the file size and the amount of system resources necessary to process the audio.

Safe Mode. Adjusts the Input Buffer Size.
These modes allow you to adjust the input buffer size to optimize performance for your computer. When adjusting the safe mode, the block size will be adjusted automatically to provide the best performance.

Block Size. Sets the buffer size.
From this menu, you can set the buffer size from 64 to 8192 samples.
Lowering the buffer size will lower latency; however, this will also increase performance demands on your computer. In general, you will want to set the buffer size as low as your system can safely support. If you begin to hear pops, clicks, or distortion in your audio path, try raising the buffer size. Note: When adjusting the block size, the Safe Mode will automatically change to provide the best performance.

    - run Latencymon for 10 minutes (post a screenshot of the result here, see picture below for example)
    - set power plan to Ultimate performance
    - if you have a Nvidia graphic card set to Prefer Maximum performance (see picture below)
    - Don't use USB hubs/adapters on your audio interface. Straight in the motherboard (USB 2.0 port is preferred see picture below)
    - Be sure to use the original USB cable, some cables don't transfer power well. You can also try and buy a cable with extra noise reduction and power transfer:
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/353205382927
    - Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on your USB port that the Presonus USB 96 is connected to in Device Manager (see picture below)
    - be sure that the same sample rate on all playback devices in Windows are the same as in the Presonus software (see picture below)

hmm, i have one extra interface, a Studio 68 (similar card) that started behaving like that about one or two months ago after a major W10 update. haven't had the time to investigate what the problem is but it suddenly sounded blown out, i think i deleted the driver rebooted and then installed it again and somehow that problem went away. i had to match the the W10 audio panel to be the exact same resolution as my daw, 48hz or 44hz that also had changed after the update.

BUT, one problem remained though, crackling noises in my regular windows use. if watching youtube at the same time as having a Daw open with a cpu demanding project the sound in youtube was all full of crackling and glitches untill i closed the daw or opened an smaller project.

its weird because that never happened before. youtube never sounded like that even if my cpu was under pressure in my daw, they behaved like separated audio engines somehow.

Hello. I never got a chance to thank you all for taking the time to help me out. I think i have come to the conclusion that it is a driver issue because i plugged my audiobox into my mother's laptop and it worked fine.

So i am going to do a fresh install of Windows and hope that does the trick. If it doesn't i'm going to be heated though because a Windows re-install is at least 2 days of getting things back to how they were and some of the things i cannot remember how i got them installed (ie new Cubase) and got lucky that they worked.

Anyways, Thank You Guys Again! I love you all very much! All of you!

    sounds like usb power issue
windows deactivates the usb and "pops" back up when you play a sound

check under powermanagement - usb/devices (never energysavings)

you probably would be better serverd with
    a better, used interface

    cheap
audient or, i know that sounds wild, behringer hd

    and for reference julian krause
