I usually use Audacity's frequency spectrum graph to see the actual frequencies of my WAV exports.
(E.g. Bass track, Pad track etc.)

The problem is that the scale depends on the actual loudness of the WAV file.
Sometimes it's -14 dB, -7 dB etc.
I even tried adding some dummy sound at 20 kHz but it still varies.
Changing settings within Audacity didn't help.

The prefered Analyzer should have a fixed limit, so that all spectrums can actually be compared.
Here an example of two different images (from 2 songs) which can't be compared that easily:



I would like to have a fixed scale, e.g. always 0 dB - indepenent of the real loudness.

Just normalize your songs to a specific level. How about -1TP?

the only one i knew to do that (in real time) is the mighty

it is using different form of scale then most others use
other than that Wavelab had a useful but rather normal
but colour-coded waterfall graph with a customisable 3d view

 

I think this may be more related to the freq graph display options than the real audio processing.
Even if you normalize the global loudness the top graph level will be different depending on the frequency distribution of each song.

Get ADTR Metric AB when it's on sale. It's for A/B checking various mixes but has great additonal functions like a spectrum analyzer with filters for monitoring specific frequency ranges, phase correlation, dnymics histogramm, loudness metering, etc.

For sure, my pleasure.

I haven't come across an analyzer with this option (automatic adjustment). Just imagine how this will work in realtime.

But it seems dondada knows at least of one.

EDIT: Ok, third rash response this week. I need more sleep.
Of course it's caused by a different weighting of the analyzer. Sadly, I couldn't find an option for this in Audacity.
On top of it, even when you normalize two files, the scale differs. So this won't solve the problem.

it is a different weighting and scale

you guys certanly know the old XL Analyzer


for instance the -10 db was a great indicator of a lot of Club Limiters

if i could:
i would only use Pinguin on the Master out of the rig
the Xl Analyzer and Maat (Algorythmix )DR Meter on the master of the daw and (maybe) ssl Xism


Maybe i should request the new Master P. since they got rid of the Dongle but on the other hand
it only cost 300 instead of 1000 before

If I'm not wrong (for the fourth time this week) all the analyzers posted so far are realtime, right? But OP is asking for an offline analyzer.

I think I found one: Hofa IQ-Series Analyser: Analysis of .wav, .aif, .mp3, .flac, .ogg files via drag & drop directly from Explorer or Finder

There has to be a relatively simple option. We're talking about an offline tool. But beats me if I know it.
We need to be able to adjust the top of the graph (say 0dB) and the decibels per bar (12, 20, whatever...).

you can do things like that using supercollider or max/msp, because they come with a NRT driver so that oyu can do "everything" also in NRT - but even there "doing" it would still mean "program it yourself".

adding a normalize function to the display of the average spectral content of a file is a no brainer then.

i have no idea why not even spectrafoo can do that. i know this program so long that back in the days it was ONLY nonrealtime - but it can not normalize the display and it can not do batch process either.

comparing different files is mostly why we would like to analyse them, isn´t it? so i totally understand your request.

 

he could copy the results into photoshop and strecth the images up until the highest meter hits the ceiling. ;)

what audacity is doing, adjusting the max decibel of the file to the window size, is really strange.
