Yes, that seems to be the way of things at the moment.

Ok, it would be interesting to see someone from the forum get signed, and if they get totally ripped off, using "reporting for bullying" as the get-out clause lol

If The Beatles, thee most successful band of all time, can get conned out of a massive amount of income and even the rights to their own music, due to their own early naivity, then that's a lesson worth learning for everyone.

To be serious during 5 seconds, what disgust me in my country is that some well-implanted medias (mainly, radios, because despite internet and all, some of them have kept a serious power of influence on the music (mainly pop, R'nB & mainstream vocal EDM) market) so when these radios accept to promote, to play an artist often, in return they ask for a BIG part of your royalties!

So it's like you're no more the main copyright holder of your own song, but a co-creator, a co-composer, co writer, co-arranger and co-editor...

I once spoke to a radio-promoted guy, he said he have accepted to conceal... 80% of his creator's royalties! For me it's unbearable.

Of course when you organize a promotion campaign for an artist it's costing you money, OK you take risks, but you should not try to recover your investment on something that is sacred: the creator's rights and ownership on his own work.

For example, a friend of mine longtime ago have organized an "independent bands' promotion tour", because she wanted to do something for the local / regional bands that was struggling to obtain dates, venues, participations on festivals, whatever you can find to try to survive as unknown artists. She never asked for something like royalties, she said: the benefits of the concerts will serve to pay the bills and technicians salaries, but everything that remains will go directly on your pocket. Everything. She never taken anything for her.

So my point of view is the following: if you wanna have financial returns, organize a lot of tours and live (not only festivals, but also broadcast-youtube-whatever) performances, and take all the money if you have to. But never touch my legitimate owner's rights. It's just a scandalous - and hypocrite - arrangement.
