I am sure most outsiders also had some influence, I remembered that what influenced me, us, to play wind instruments mixed with guitars or rock was an album of Fred Frith (damn I found it!!), an this was freak because I got that album myself by mistake, my parents used to listen weather report, yes, gentle giant, king crimson, during my childhood, he used to save radio specials from underground radios, I liked elephant talk and thela hun ginjeet from crimson, I guess I messed the names Fripp for Frith, in fact my father and me we had a collection of music with the name of artists all messed up as we get most from radio specials, as background this was in the middle of Pinochet dictatorship in Chile, music and art was specially controlled or banned epic musicians, poets and intellectuals killed, my parents were hippies that turned into a quiet mysticism, instead of the crazy freedom everywhere else. Chile had a high tax over culture items, any kind of art, books, music was very expensive there, no idea if things changed.

Talking about Robert Fripp I found super interesting that he was so influenced by Gurdjieff and Outspensky, my parents were also into that line, and "fragments of an unknown teaching" was the first influence that I got about Pythagorean tuning mixed with a lot of spiritual mumbo jumbo, anyway was interesting and worth the trip.

Fripp started what was intended as a permanent sabbatical from his career in 1975, during which he cultivated an interest in the teachings of Gurdjieff via J. G. Bennett (studies which would later be influential in his work with Guitar Craft). He returned to musical work as a studio guitarist on Peter Gabriel's first self-titled album in 1976, released the following year. Fripp toured with Gabriel to support the album, but remained out of sight (either in the wings or behind a curtain) and used the pseudonym "Dusty Rhodes".

Similar about Barrett, his friends were followers of a Sikh Guru that turned him down to be too young, this rejection was described by his friends to be pretty deep and affected his personality.
    1. Barrett tried to join a religious sect before achieving success as a musician.
In the summer of 1965, as Barrett took his first steps into the music world with an embryonic Pink Floyd, he also began using psychedelic drugs with friends in the Cambridge intellectual coterie. The introspection induced by LSD and other consciousness-expanding substances led many in his circle to convert to a sect of Sikhism known as Sant Mat (literally “Path of the Saints”). Dating back to 13th-century India, the religion follows a strict moral code and principles of abstinence. “A lot of people of Syd’s acquaintance were drawn quite hysterically, with massive enthusiasm, into it,” recalled David Gale, a close friend of Barrett’s, when interviewed by author Rob Chapman.

One by one, young bohemians of Cambridge made pilgrimages to India and returned profoundly changed. “[They] came back home, cut their hair off, threw away their hippie clothes, got suits, got a job, became vegetarians, stopped drinking, smoking and taking drugs, married women of the same persuasion as them, only had sex for procreative purposes, were advised to be ‘ordinary’ and to keep their heads down,” Gale continued.

Barrett, who was anything but “ordinary,” very nearly joined them. The 19-year-old traveled to a London hotel to become admitted by the sect’s leader, a guru called Maharaj Charan Singh Ji – known as “the Master” by devotees. “He asked the Master and the Master said, ‘I will not take an emotional request,'” says friend Andrew Rawlinson, a devout follower. “At that time it was very unusual for the Master to turn anybody down, but he did turn Syd down. He told him that his request to be initiated was emotional and not based on genuine spiritual research.”

By all accounts, the rejection crushed the young artist. Given Barrett’s future mental health struggles, a simple drug-free life of structure and meditation might have been the best thing for him. But regardless of whether such a conversion would have saved the man’s mind, it more than likely would have put a premature end to Syd Barrett: Rock Star.

Maybe I will open a thread about music and mysticism, it's interesting as a source of inspiration and creativity (not the christian ones of course lol)

Usually it's on free music websites with a lot of those random free youtube music alike.

Quite nice coincidence, I was looking for free acapellas months ago and then took a look on the experimental music there, and I just checked to give you the link and actually I downloaded some Daniel Johnston songs!! I really like the purity or the expression beside breaking rhythm or the melody to make the lyrics fit into.

Free Music Archive - Experimental Genre search 35659 Tracks Found
    https://freemusicarchive.org/search?adv=1&search-genre=Experimental&&

    I found this there, outsider

other styles (no idea if fits on outsider) but still pretty to me

https://www.freemusicarchive.org/music/Shaolin_Dub/macro-micro/the-plan this one reminded me the beginning of this "Epic Outsider" King Crimson one lol

Yeah I saw that video :)

Why not include this one from Gentle Giant "outsiders of progressive rock", first cyber meeting after 40 years
Some notable contributors also make an appearance such as Jakko Jakszyk of King Crimson, Billy Sherwood of Yes, E.L.O. bassist Lee Pomeroy, Dan Reed of the Dan Reed Network, Richard Hilton of Chic and Mikey Heppner of Priestess.

Oh yeah, it wasn't meant to be a rip on Fripp. It looks like he's having a fantastic time!

I've heard Gentle Giant often mentioned as an influence of Cardiacs. Although they're definitely outsiders, I'm not sure they'd be included in Outsider category:

    (Particularly from 2:05 onwards)

Yes, I also Enjoy see them, reading about Gentle Giant was nice to know that while they stopped playing music they helped other musicians... "Derek Shulman is the lead singer who in his post-Giant days became a record executive and signed Bon Jovi, Tears For Fears and Nickelback. His brother Ray Shulman played bass and went on to produce The Sugarcubes and Bjork."

Cool I didn't know Cardiacs, I really enjoyed and laugh a bit after 2:05 the beginning and the general attitude reminded me of DEVO

    LOL

SPK - The abbreviation SPK interpreted the band differently with almost every publication: System Planning Corporation, Surgical Penis Clinic or Socialist Patient Collective

    SPK - No More - Single – 1979

    SPK - Factory EP

SPK - The Insect Musicians (which contains songs composed from insect noises )

The band was formed in 1978 in Sydney by Graeme Revell, who worked as a nurse in a psychiatric clinic, Neil Hill, an outpatient schizophrenia patient at the clinic, and Sinan, Graeme Revell's future wife. Neil Hill, who changed his name to Ne / H / il, committed suicide in February 1984. In addition to the three founding members, a number of other musicians played in the band at times. B. Brian Williams, better known as lust murder, or the multi-instrumentalist John Murphy (often also called Jonh Murphy). Gradually, however, SPK became more and more of a solo project by Revell.

The appearances of SPK from the early days are legendary. B. Film recordings from the pathology were shown, which sometimes caused a shock in the audience. The first releases, up to Leichenschrei, are mostly disturbing, monotonous, noisy sound collages, underlaid with voices and screams. Often times, the content at this stage revolves around mental and physical illness, death, and human decline. They published their subversive, nihilistic philosophy in radical manifestos as a supplement to their albums. B. The Post-Industrial Strategy or The Administration of Death.

To me sound like punk rock, interesting the GRAEME REVELL : "The Insect Musicians" I listened some different parts, I was thinking to do something similar but with birds, some kind of dub step with birds growls and birds melodies, sadly, birds don't like autotune or tempered scales xD

Not outsiders, but so underground by cultural frontiers

Fulano was a Chilean progressive rock, jazz fusion and experimental music band. They were one of the most important bands in the development of jazz-rock in Chile or, as described by musicologist Juan Pablo González, of "anti-hegemonic eclecticism". With an oeuvre consisting of six high quality and virtuosic albums, they have been widely recognised as pillars of jazz-rock and experimental music in Latin America .

Throbbing Gristle ‎– Industrial Introduction (1977)

Throbbing Gristle ‎– Slug Bait - ICA (1977)

Throbbing Gristle ‎– San Francisco (1981)

Throbbing Gristle were an English music and visual arts group formed in 1975 in Kingston upon Hull by Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Peter Christopherson, and Chris Carter. They are widely regarded as pioneers of industrial music. Evolving from the experimental performance art group COUM Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle made their public debut in October 1976 on COUM exhibition Prostitution, and released their debut single "United/Zyklon B Zombie" and debut album The Second Annual Report the following year. Lyrical themes mainly revolved around mysticism, extremist political ideologies, sexuality, dark or underground aspects of society, and idiosyncratic manipulation of language.

LOL I liked it even more, I think is the Jazz complex syndrome.

Laugh at myself, sometimes I get youtube playing some weird experimental music lists an then I am like "hmmm this sound super interesting"... and after looking the artist and song I realize that were just two different songs playing in different tabs.

@FrankPig I was reading the wikipedia page about cardiacs and this seems like a dark joke from Karma?
Cardiacs were placed on indefinite hiatus following the 2008 hospitalisation of Tim Smith, after a cardiopulmonary arrest which subsequently led him to develop the rare neurological disorder dystonia. "Dystonia is a neurological hyperkinetic movement disorder syndrome in which sustained or repetitive muscle contractions result in twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal fixed postures. The movements may resemble a tremor. "

This is true, he had a heart attack after a My Bloody Valentines gig, I believe, which led to further complications, essentially being "locked in" for his remaining years.
He sadly passed last year, but not before receiving an honorary Doctorate of Music at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

I know this dude personally. He's a Turkish grocery store owner who became obsessed with writing (bad) poetry and singing.

Butthole Surfers - Butthole Surfers (Full EP) 1983

    Butthole Surfers - American Woman

Butthole Surfers - Waiting For Jimmy To Kick

The band was formed in 1981 by Gibson "Gibby" Haynes (vocals) and Paul Leary Walthall (guitar) in San Antonio. Both met in 1977 as students at Trinity University there. In 1983 Jeffery "King" Coffey joined them as a drummer. These three formed the core members for the following years of the band's existence. Other temporary members included: Teresa Taylor as second drummer and several bassists, including Jeff Pinkus, Andrew Weiss, Bill Jolly and Mark Kramer.

Their first EP of the same name was released in 1983 for Jello Biafra's record label Alternative Tentacles, and a live LP was recorded the following year to compensate for the out of control expenses for the recordings for the first record. Already on their debut EP they provoked with titles like The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave and The Revenge of Anus Presley. They recorded their first album Psychic ... Powerless ... Another Man's Sac from 1984 for the Touch and Go Records label. In addition to hardcore punk, the band's sound was still heavily influenced by psychedelic rock and heavy metal. This mix makes them a forerunner of grunge rock. However, their sound changed over the years. The second album Rembrandt Pussyhorse from 1986 is reminiscent of avant-garde bands like the Einstürzende Neubauten and the Residents with its experimental tones.

It's not very often that Cardiacs get a mention so I'm glad to see people here acknowledging them. I met Tim Smith on a few occasions and he really was one of the sweetest human beings you could ever meet. They say never meet your heroes but Tim was an absolute pleasure. I will truly miss him.
