Rapper "Dave East" says writing your raps is cheating and if you can't freestyle you shouldn't rap.

Hilarious. There's adifference between FREESTYLING and writing lyrics.

What he says equals: writing songs isn't real, in stead every artist should sing songs from the top of their heads, out of thin air.

    Totally ridiculous ofcourse

I would say it doesn't matter if a song is written or improvised if the result is good in the end. But, and this is my personal feeling about it, I think it's an advantage if a rapper is skilled in freestyling.... Freestyle rap is a bit like gesture drawing, it trains the flow, it trains the thinking processes, the melodies and patterns. Just like a drawer or painter, you can tell if a rapper has trained this discipline. The result of written songs (if the artist is trained in freestyling) then feels much more natural to me in most cases, more intuitive, less stiff and constructed. But as always, there are exceptions and the transitions are fluid.

This is nothing particular Scandinavian. We did this here in Berlin way back. Actually we refined the idea: we rented a location, got a big ass beamer and collected random images to project on the wall (I'm a bit proud, because this was all my idea, but I had a lot of helping hands back then when we still had our small hiphop collective). Then the rappers would have to improvise and rap about what they saw. Lots of fun.

A bit sad no one picked up the idea after us, I really enjoyed the audiovisual nature of the challenge. We called it "rap what you see". Feel free to pick up the idea!

Speaking of American, wrestling-like rap battles: those are not really freestyle battles, but prewritten and preconceptualized. This is a trend since a few years, we also have these sort of battles here in Germany ("Toptier Takeover", formerly known as "Rap Am Mittwoch" and their cringe version "Don't Let The Label Label You"). Funny enough at some point genuine freestyle battles became less popular and the staged kind of written battles became very popular (mostly attracting a non-hiphop crowd).

@Jake Jlinngall I don't know who this guy even is, but I took his comments to be about just battle rapping/live mcing. and about pre-written material. You can only imagine the studio money hole and horrible music that "everything on the spot" approach would end up with, making an album or even one track. is that what this guy does, or does he at least sell some music? I really doubt anyone would do that. from what I could hear him mumble, I think he meant live.

Most of the best freestylers are mediocre studio rappers, in terms of lyricism. Jin and Harry Mack come to mind.

I stick to instrumental music as much as possible.
    Lyrics, rapping, they're just confessions.
People can take and twist anything you say to mean anything else and if you said something that goes agaist the current values of the time and that stance isn't trendy, be prepared to be crucified.
That's why people who aren't talking are usually smiling. :winker:
But if you want to confess, speak into ze microphone

It's not a contest. What about those of us who would like to see you do something melodic? In my opinion rapping is just quick talking, and not really singing, but I don't give them hell. They can do what they want. If you are doing this to move yourself up the totem pole and the pecking order is important to you, then you are doing it for the wrong reason. If you are doing it for the pecking order, I'm sorry to tell you that rap is way down on the totem pole musically speaking. Why would you put competition in the formula? You've already lost just by being a rapper. Most of it sounds the same to me.

It's alright not to get something, it really is. But I'd refrain from making holier than thou commentary on things you don't understand, it just makes you look like a twat.
