Weird software bug with headphone jack on a rooted galaxy s8(exynos)

    I know this isn't the right forum to ask this, and I apologize but I've tried Quora and XDA and have got no responses.
    Long story short, I have a hand me down S8, and when I connect wired headphones to it and listen to music or watch YouTube it works great, but whenever I try making a call, WhatsApp, Signal, Discord or normal phone calls, the audio feed starts cracking up horribly and breaking up to the point where I cannot comprehend anything the other person says, and apparently the other side cannot hear me too. My assumption is that its a software bug since calls work fine without the headphones, but I can't really call people without using headphones most of the time. I found a Samsung forum claiming the same issue and that its been a common issue for a while with no fixes, but I can't comprehend how that's possible. I've tried this with Lineage OS and Havoc OS for android 10 and 11 respectively but I have the same issues across the ROMs. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I'm desperate.

    First, make sure that there is no foreign object in the headphone jack of your smartphone or that the connection is otherwise contaminated.
    Then you have the option of performing a hardware diagnosis using the Samsung Members App. If the app is not installed on your device, you can download it from the Play Store. In the app, simply tap on "Diagnostics> Test Hardware> Ports".

    it's best to have your Samsung Galaxy S8 checked. Do you live near one of our Customer Service Plaza? Bring it over there with the headphones and let our experts take a look.

    As I was saying, I highly doubt its a hardware issue because it works PERFECTLY fine when I use ANY pair of headphones to listen to ANYTHING other than calls. The issue only comes up when I try calling someone, irrespective of the medium(Signal, WhatsApp etc). And I can't bring into a service centre ebcause I'm sure they won't like that I've rooted the phone XD

    Yes, I'm aware of the potential downfalls of rooting, thank you, but this issue isn't related to rooting at all, it happens on stock phones too. There's just no use going to a service centre is all I'm saying!

    Yes, now I understand you. Since when has this problem started and has it gotten better now? Have you been hacked? Have you really made enough phone calls? We want to try to solve the problem by excluding something.

    - The phone number you dialed was blocked by you
    - How do I turn on / off airplane mode
    - Increase call volume Click to Expand
    - Contact network operator Click to Expand
    - Use Safe Mode Click to Expand
    - Check SIM cardClick to Expand
    - Disable WiFi calls

    Troubleshooting the call settings

    1 You have blocked the phone number you dialed
    You have the option to block or unblock any number. To do this, proceed as follows:
    Step 1 Start the phone app.
    Step 2 Tap the three dots icon.
    Step 3 Tap Settings.
    Step 4 Tap Block Numbers.
    Step 5 Type in the number you want or tap on Contacts and select the contact you want.
    Step 6 Tap the plus symbol.
    Step 7 The number you dialed has been blocked.
    Step 8 To unblock and unblock a number, tap on the minus symbol.

    2 Airplane mode is on
    When Airplane mode is activated, calls can not be answered or made, and text messages can not be sent or received. This is because airplane mode restricts all network connections to your mobile device to avoid interference with sensitive devices.
    How do I turn on / off airplane mode?
    Step 1 Drag the quick settings bar down with one finger.
    Step 2 Tap the airplane symbol to activate or deactivate offline mode.
    3 You have activated call barring
    Call barring is a setting in the Phone app that restricts incoming or outgoing calls once activated.
    How do I check my call barring settings?
    Step 1 Start the phone app.
    Step 2 Tap the three dots icon.
    Step 3 Tap Settings.
    Step 4 Tap on Additional Services.
    Step 5 Tap Call Barring.
    Step 6 Tap Voice Call.
    Step 7 Tap on the desired point.

    Can't answer to the question, though it seems to me that if (many) users complain the same kind of problem, rooted or stock, is an ill-fated model or there is an hw defect at least in a certain amount of products.
    And if XDA cannot solve it...

    Undeniably true.

    I politely dissent.
    I had a lot of advantages in rooting smart: first off, getting rid of all useless, annoying and unrequested bloating apps.
    Then make use of a real firewall avoiding the VPN trick, and then make use of various root apps, browsers, etc.

    I think that every user should have the possibility to choose if comply to manufacturer rules and warranty within or modify OS at his own risk, of course.
    After all, will be very difficult (not impossible however) to damage/destroy hardware with a custom rom.
    And before the e-fuse trip was very difficult to recognize a previously tampered phone from a stock rom reflashed one.

    have you tried downgrading it to the OS version it shipped with? Which is 7.0. The page of specs I am looking at shows it is upgradable to Android 9.0 Pie. it may not mention further android versions just due to omission or time of publication.

    That is where I would start if you really do think it is a software related issue. Downgrade the phone and then test the hardware again.
    Opening and cleaning it is not a bad idea. Visual inspection of parts usually has been a lost cause for me, especially with phones that have gotten wet and had the rice trick done to them. (Silica works better anyway). Certain things will just never work properly again.
    Batteries can cause a lot of problems that you would not expect, sometimes changing them helps.
    If the original OS causes the same thing, you know it is hardware damage. A software-caused bug like that would impact every S8 running the same android build it shipped with. (you'd know about it already, and not from just XDA posts) but a failing battery can do things you would never suspect it of.

    this is why second hand phones can really suck. you generally have no clue what has happened to them in many cases. other than the fact you ended up with it second hand and there is usually a reason other than just normal users upgrading.

    Thank you for this information, I'll try the steps you've mentioned regarding safemode, that seems to be the best bet.

    I must ask though, I'm very intrigued by the style of your responses so far(in a lighthearted sense!) do you work in the smartphone service industry/know someone in it or are these answers from some other samsung forum? Your replies are formatted in a very specific way! XD

    so I really don't know what to do.

    Yeah I know, the best bet is to downgrade back to a stock rom and check, I've been trying to avoid doing that since this is my primary phone, but it does seem like this is the only choice I have(or I'll have to try wireless options and see if they work) Gosh this sucks, but it is what it is, I guess. Thank god NANDroid backups exists, I'll just stay up at night and run my tests then! XD

    Hello @Hareesh S, I thought nobody answered him and contributed to the solution of his problem, maybe I can contribute something that you can call again. I then read something and try to find some possible solutions. No, I neither worked in the smartphone industry nor do I know anyone there. I do sound design for hardware and software synthesizers and repair Windows PCs. I like to solve problems and am happy when I can help other people. The answers are partly from me and partly from Samsung directly.

    Sounds like audio path issue did you try unplugging the headphones jack and plug in again while you are in a call couple of times also there is an app that can change audio paths and possibly fix your issue something similar had happened to me in the past on a htc device it wasn't the infamous audio buffer bug or glitch it was the audio path

    @Alex Smith of course that's why brainless carefree installing apps on phones is bad sticking to known publishers/devs can lower the risk @Hareesh S did you solve you issue? by the way try Lesser AudioSwitch or SoundAbout apps they can switch audio paths around

    Haven't solved it yet. I'm almost positive its a buffer size issue, no clue how to change it though. Bluetooth audio works fine, and the headphone jack audio works normally outside calls, so I'm putting up with it for now.
