guys, I play a lot of music videos on my samsung tv (tizen) but the default player is pure misery.

besides how awful it looks (like windows 1.0) it doesn't have playlists, and to me most important, you can't randomise the order of the videos other than by date.

all the other alternatives seems to work around streaming from a server, but I don't need or want to have a separate machine running when I already can attach my drive to the back of the tv and see the content, just in a very crude and basic way

the ideal would be (besides the randomise feature) to find a nice looking designed app like Netflix, Spotify etc that offered the alternative to freaking look into an attached drive and present it in a decent way

is there really no app that offers these simple features?

Ok, after a time of research I’ve tested several solutions and concluded emby is among the most nice looking and functional, they have a premium though to make it work properly and, you send your information to their servers…

But, there is a branch of emby that is getting heavy development called jellyfin , it’s completely open source, free and community driven!! its client tizen app is being worked on so I’ll be choosing it for my system, when available..hopefully soon

still I wonder why nobody has developed a similar thing just as a standalone app in the tv? Why a separate server when the tv already works with attached usb drives!?

Maybe someone who knows a bit more about these things can cast some light on why this is

I agree that it's a pretty miserable media player in Tizen.
For some reason that I don't resemble quite well I didn't like Emby so I uninstalled it.
I settled on Serviio, enough for my purposes, I use its DNLA server also for Neutron Player on my phone.

I have Emby (after switching from Plex, that constantly screwed up filenames). Pretty happy.
I guess it's still a Media server, it needs a PC to run on, like Plex.
Maybe the payed version allows to run files directly from a drive connected to a TV, to my understanding the free version doesn't.
Further, the free version employs a nag delay of 11 secs every first time you start the player on a day, or sometimes when you didn't use Emby for a couple of hours. A bit annoying, but 120 bucks for the payed version is too..

You can do what I and some others do; attach a PC to your TV and use whatever is available for your OS.

yeah, i noticed that annoying nag delay, what a dumb move. you dont f%ck with people choosing your free version, those people are the ones that are going to learn your software, learn to like it, and then probably upgrade. we are not going to upgrade because you annoy us you cant do that shit today when there are so many alternatives coming up.

and therefor i discovered jellyfin, and that is the one im going to use, until someone makes a similar great looking app that only runs locally on the tv.

btw, i dont think emby lets you do that even with premium, but ill check it out further.

I'm waiting for Jellyfin myself. Development for my LG TV was at a stand still for some time, but they continued and pretty close to a release. Samsung Tizen also doesn't have a stable version, or does it? https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-tizen

oh, LG, i dont know what os they use but yes, the Tizen app is in development and seems like close to a release from what ive read. today there is not a packaged version, you have to compile it yourself, im going to do that one of these days to see how far its come.

    one question,
do you happen to know if it’s the server computer that does the processing of the video?

or does it only send the data to the tv and the TVs cpu does the video processing? I’m not really sure how it works

Good question. I think a PC/Mac (or NAS, or Firestick) does the processing, TV is only used as a screen.
Free version uses software based FFMPEG transcoding (when needed), Payed Emby Premiere can utilise hardware GPU transcoding.

just commenting that the tizen version of jellyfin seems to be dormant, almost totally dead I’m afraid.

I’ve waited but there is zero further development.

As far as I understand you need two programs to run jellyfin, one client on the tv, and one server on a computer.

Wish at least you only needed the server app and could use a hdmi and skip the client that is taking so long in development.

    Or even better!!
why not make a simpler app version of it that runs locally on the tv instead of incorporating a full fledged server that needs to run on yet another piece of hardware

I mean I can imagine many or maybe even most people just want to enjoy their movies and music on their tv when at home, I really never find myself requiring to watch or listening to my stuff when I’m not at home, it’s a real stretch. Wish I knew how to code and I would code a “simple” jellyfin version that runs locally on the tv, no extra remote server fluff .… but what do I know maybe it’s more complicated than I think

i'ld be happy if manufacturers these days could make a decent receiver. atleast theres plenty of the old stuff still around, but there seems to be a trade off

then with the Jellyfin branch it’s the client app that is holding it all up, and the client should be a super small, simple app that only handshakes, and the heavy lifting would appear to be done by the server app on the Mac/pc. frustrating..

Yeah, bummer. Also don't see any progress on the LG version. I know TV brands have a lengthy review proces. This will add to the delay.

hmm, well it actually works now using the Samsung web browser app. Not perfect but it works

the only bad thing is the darn Samsung browser cursor doesn't work with the carousel of movies without rushing from one end to the other, impossible to pinpoint and stop at the right file…

I wonder if its a Jellyfin problem or if its the browser cursor that if f%cked

if I manage to disable that silly “jump to” feature I’m a happy camper

I found out that not long ago (not anymore) the tizen client of Emby actually worked with Jellyfin server

it got me thinking if there was any cracked version of Plex or Emby server program anywhere around the web. I mean even for only for only local use it would be great, while waiting for a tizen client. even if the web-client works with a keyboard or real mouse its a somewhat crude experince

if anyone finds a Plex or Emby server fixed* it would be nice to hear about it
