Hello everybody! Let's see if anyone around here knows anything about this. Is there a way to, with a MIDI controller (one pad or one trigger, for example), play a MIDI file note by note? I explain. For example, I have a MIDI file with this score:

How could I play note-for-note every time I hit a pad? One blow and an E sounds, another blow and another E sounds, another blow and the F sounds, another and the G sounds ... and so on. Regardless of the duration between hit and hit, of course.

Let's see if anyone knows the way to do it, because I can't find it and I don't know if that's possible.

    Thanks and best regards!

I'm not a fan of MIDI - more of a fan of playing it in myself. So pick out notes and play them yourself on the MidKeyboard.

Oh yes, me too. But is not for play a false direct, is for another thing, another type of spectacle.

I already understood you. Tell me which midi device or midikeyboard you use? Ableton FL Studio etc ?

hy-plugins hy-seq16x3v2, for example. put the lower bar in "key" view. at the right, switch on "key -> seq trigger" and trigger mode to "3". thats "Each note on message trigger one clock". now you have the sequence's rhythm under your control. imho other sequencers work similarly?

    from the sugarbytes thesys docs:
Note On triggers (starts) Thesys as soon as a note is played. Thesys continues to play as long as the note is held.
Note Toggle toggles (starts and stops) Thesys with any incoming MIDI note. The first note starts the sequencer and the next incoming note stops it.

theres no single stepping in thesys, or am i missing something?
MrTopo!, just for clarification. you want a predetermined note sequence, that per pad/key tap goes one and only one note forward? then thats not possible with thesys, regarding their manual, imho?

TriggerTune by Max for Cats: Free One-Button Melodic Step Sequencer

This week I have a brand new and free Max for Live MIDI Effect from Max for Cats for you guys. TriggerTune is designed in such a way that it can play a melodic sequence with just one keystroke (MIDI mappable) or an incoming MIDI note. This enables drummers, for example, to assign the 'STEP' button to a MIDI trigger pad and to play a given sequence rhythmically. This in turn can control any synth, sampler or MIDI instrument.

It would be nice to know which DAW..

In Reaper you can go Actions > (section) Midi editor > "Navigate: Select next note" and assign a trigger (a bit basic)

In Ableton there are many step seq that will do the job, like the one @BEAT16 mentioned.. or maybe this:

Depends on the DAW, but most classic DAWs (Logic, Cubase, ProTools) and beat machines (Maschine, Akai MPC) have such a mode built in. Here is how its done in Cubase:

If your DAW has no such mode, you can use an additional sequencer instrument plugin like the HY-Plugins one mentioned above.

The midi device would be the ddrum trigger interface, with only one trigger connected. And software could be mainly Studio One or Reaper.

hy-seq16x3v2 looks good maybe, I will to try! Thanks.

Thesys, like you say, seems not work for me, because like you said, per pad/key tap goes one and only one note forward.

TriggerTune seems work different that I need.

The Cubase's Step Input works to imput notes, but not for play these, not?

    Thanks for your answers!

Yp, I think the OP is not after a simple "step input"

    - he wants to apply a rhythm to a given melodic sequence, and
    - he wants to do it real time, smashing one (MIDI) trigger

the closest term that comes to mind in music terminology would be Isorhythm, but it's a bit different..
..anyway, I miss this little thingy so much

To be more specific, I wanted to do something like this:

It doesn't really play the notes, it's just a midi trigger that play the next note as soon as I get the impulse. This sets the duration of the notes, but the correct notes always sound.

I had thought to use one DDrum DDTI Trigger Interface (or similar), with only one trigger connected. Software now none, whichever is needed.
