In the future kids will be asking, "I would like to know which streaming platform has the best hiss, crackle, and tape wow and flutter?"

Things you will likely never hear the majority of end-users (the buyers of music) say:

    1. I bought it because I liked the DAW they used
    2. I bought it because I know what vst's they used
    3. I bought it because I so loved the compression algorithm they used
    4. I bought it because I analysed the mix and loved the peak scaling and LUFS
    5. I bought it because while the music sucked, the engineering was great

People buy music because they love the music as it reaches some part of them in one way or another and makes them feel good. The technicalities of what, how and why are only relevant if it is impossible to hear the music and the composer's intent. Nearly every engineer on the planet can almost say they believe they could have done it better, just ask them.

Well in terms of distributing the 'film' it does comply to certain broadcast standards and is in a compressed format where Netflix demand minimum specifications for bitrate (determines quality) of your movie and colour dynamic range and , of course, all in 4K hence a list of cameras that comply to use to shoot your 'film'.....but there are rare exceptions if the content is worthy of showing of some not on that list. But in the end, it's the customers that are important. They couldn't care less what camera it was shot on or how audio was recorded but you certainly know when the IMDB reviews talk about 'mumbling actors'. 'wrong music', 'music too loud', 'shaking camera hurts', 'wooden acting', 'story went nowhere', 'no empathy for these characters' etc. where the content fails to impress.

It is a few years old but shows it is happening - https://www.imore.com/netflix-increasing-compression-so-why-isnt-apple

And more video compression is coming!
H266 will reduce video sizes by half!
Maybe this will encourage Netflix to increase those bitrates that it has reduced previously?

VVC: more efficient H.266 completed as a successor to H.265

The successor codec of the HEVC is called VVC, short for Versatile Video Codec or H.266 and is now officially completed.
The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute recently announced this in a new press release. The successor to H.265 wants to work with an even more efficient video compression and thereby "devour" up to 50 percent less bit rate than its predecessor. Fraunhofer has now finalized the standardization of the new codec and speaks of a milestone in retrospect since the development of MPEG. A group of experts called the “Joint Video Exploration Team” for short JVET, a team of specialists from ITU and MPEG, is responsible for the development. The “memory yield” of up to 50 percent could have a very positive effect, especially when you think of 4K and UHD but also 8K video. Fraunhofer gives the example that a 90-minute long film in UHD resolution as H.265 requires a good 10 gigabytes of data.

With the new H.266, the requirement is reduced to 5 gigabytes while achieving the same image quality. Fraunhofer then explicitly sees the focus on 4K UHD material and its distribution. In theory, VVC is suitable for video material up to 16K. However, since 4K video has not even really reached the end user, 8K and even 16K are still very broad visions of the future. The hardware implementation of VVC or H.266 should not take place before July 2021, but the first software should appear as early as autumn this year. In addition, as the successor to H.265, the codec will almost certainly not be license-free. Quite the opposite of its competitor AV1, which is developed by the "Alliance for Open Media" as a license-free codec with equally good compression.

This is a whole topic on its own. Very complex, especially when we include the patent madness.
H265 has been used by very few companies. It's so buried in combined licenses that even those who can afford to pay them are not sure if they can comply the terms. That's why AV1 was started.
Works wonders with pirated movies using x265 I daresay

Nobody will deny that it is useful and enjoyable to transfer a video file in half the time it was previously - or a file twice the size in the same time - and that it might be worth it, whatever the fee always to be paid for the use of the corresponding codec.

However, H.265 has not yet achieved these originally envisaged goals, namely a 50% reduction in the amount of data transmitted compared to H.264 while maintaining the same quality. This is certainly due, among other things, to the fact that the benchmark has shifted a bit - because H.264 has not stepped on the spot in the meantime and has become more effective.

Current measurements of the H.265 codec software x.265 suggest that the actual improvement in compression is closer to 25%. It remains to be seen whether the users are willing in the long term to accept seven times the license fees on the basis of this not necessarily stunning optimization. It is by no means the case that there is no competition in the starting blocks that does not require license fees on top of that.
The open VP9 format, successfully used on Google's video platform Youtube, has already achieved both the compression rate and image quality of H.265 in various tests, and the market launch of the successor codec AV1, in development by the “Alliance for Open Media “Is planned for this year - and illustrious members such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Netflix have gathered in this consortium. That sounds like an important alternative to H.265 - on top of that it is license-free and therefore does not run the risk of being misunderstood as a money printing machine.

well their point is valid and i couldnt care less too but if the tech nerds want to talk bout , let em and the netflix/movie compare was lame .

since i can get everything from deezer, i voted for deezer.

    (from HQ FLAC to mp3-320)

why bother with youtube for example.

also would like to add bandcamp here, their preview track can be a live-safer, when you cant find anything decent elsewhere and dontwant/cant pay for the tracks.

There is probably no difference between normal and premium for some services. Is it all just a question of cost?

Google Play Music 320kbps AAC, ALAC, FLAC, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WMA
Spotify Premium 320kbps AAC, Ogg Vorbis
Amazon Music HD 24bit /192kHz FLAC
Tidal HiFi 24bit / 96kHz AAC, ALAC, FLAC
    Spotify Free 160kbps AAC
    Deezer Free 128kbps MP3

I dont like youtube, everything sound overcompressed on it, and it's so fuckin mainstream so people actually dont have a clue of what they are really listening too
I like spotify, when streaming we can disable the "normalization" on settings and hear the sound as its meant to be listen by whoever mastered

Considering that sometimes people with a sense of humour on here who are quick off the mark, I am surprised nobody has replied to the thread header yet with:

    "I do".

Must be that time of year

Not what I'd call important, either, but it's ridiculous to think people make music 24/7/365; maybe he's at work and whittling away the hrs.
Either way, consider dialing it down a bit, Lenny, before I get Michael Spencer up in here to get all blustery at you.

The Question was: " Who has the best sounding compression algorithm? " and it was answered in the poll - see poll.
The choices were Spotify, Soundcloud, Youtube, Apple Music, Tidal, Pandora, Amazon Music, Deezer. In addition, many users commented on the streaming services and gave comments and recommendations.

@BEAT16 You have completely missed the joke.

Someone answers the question - "Who has the best compression algorithm? I DO !!!!" - Meaning the silly, joking answer negates all other options - It's like saying "None of these, I have the best algorithm".

As I mentioned the joke has lost the slightest chance of any impetus now.
