    Hi

I am trying to find the source for the kick in my sound example below.

In the track that this comes from it is used as a off beat and has a "slurp" hat over it but if you can ignore that, listen only to the kick, on head phones or monitors would be best as it sound rubbish through computer speakers.

Also the way the kick is processed, the transiant (hardly there) and part of the body gets through before what I presume is compression kick in and blows up the tail. Not sure how thats done and |I want to learn that also.

Yes I could sample it but I dont want the hi-hats and RX8, Spectral Layers, Acoustica and PEEL all leave nasty artifacts if I try and edit the hats out and they all change the sound leaving it dull. Looking at the wav form the hi-hats are buried pretty deep in the kicks tail.

Also here is a google drive link to a small wav file of the kick if that helps.

I have tried the Roland TR 808 & 909, plus all of the drum machines in Arturia Spark and every sample set I have (33 and counting) [IMG]

The sample comes from a 1989 track so that rules out most modern sources.

As I say I am looking for the original kick, or its source (if it comes from a drum machine).

Full disclosure I asked this question on KVR but all I got were answers like "sample it" and links to crappy youtube videos about sampling or filtering which is NOT what I want.

Many thanks you audiosexy type people.

I guess it's a base drum with a clap wav, cabasa wav or shaker wav.

Well its a kick drum yeah but no cabasa or shaker, that is a open high hat followed by a quick closed hat on a tripplit

    Hey @tchouangtseu

    Thanks for your suggestion

Which Yamaha would you suggest, I know of the RX11 and RX5?

split the kick in two parts

    1. part keep the transient bit, maybe filter a lil bit if there is still a hat left, but actual doesnt matter, so maybe keep it untouched.

    2. part is the boom, you can filter below the hats there, since the boom is atleast below 150Hz.

sometimes its just easier to sample it, because drum samples could went to multiple chains of gear, something you cant reproduce anymore today, since you dont know the actual source.
Also this could be layered ofc. Also there were modified Roland drum computers out there, which could create a more variety of sounds, than the original Roland drum machines.

the most commonly sold machines from 88/89, and most affordable at the time were the Alesis SR-16 and HR-16.
Maybe you will get lucky with the Yamahas. but that kick does sound very "big" and nice quality to me for a stock hit from most machines of that time frame.

you could easily make it in Rob Papen Punch BD, probably take you 15 minutes. But I always like finding the originals too.

Alesis SE-16 Kick seems quite close to me, even though not identical. But it's also probably a 909, as the hats sounds like it. it should have been heavily processed as well, as other people pointed out

I'm pretty sure that bottom kick is a 909, also the name of the track coul be handy.

yeah, if it's from any machine, then it's probably been sampled 500,000 times too! :)

If it's an Alesis, I remember the kick from the black one being nicer and a little splashy. The HR-16B was marketed more towards Dance, Industrial type stuff.

I have a bunch of 909's that are close also. a clip/origin would definitely help the most.

It's a 909 short kick with the "decay" function a bit reduced with the open hat cut off and the sound altered in tone.

At the time, a sampler was more expensive than a drum sampler or even more than an Atari st, so a casio RZ1, casio FZ1 rack or keyboard, a personal computer with 12-bit audio capabilities that they used for that beat , also a tape recorder to use as a drum machine or drum recorder.

If we had the possibility that they went to a recording studio with expensive technology of the time, possibly, it would be equipped with any MPC60, SP12 or SP1200, akai S900 / 950, ensoniq esp, emullator II, CMI fairligth ... 80´s samplers or computers

however the original kick is TR909 and the hi-hat as well and they are altered, possibly reel to reel recording in the 80´s.
