You can't know that. Period. I don't care what you do, he, she or it does. And don't get me wrong, I'm not accusing anyone of being a bad person just because they don't have the money to afford expensive plugins or whatever else the reason may be. What bothers me is not the fact that people use cracked software, but the constant excuses along the lines of "It's just software. It's not a thing. It won't harm anyone". Well, the harm is already there from the moment someone uses a software permanently and doesn't pay for it. Believe it or not ;)

Well, I'm not a lawyer, but as I understand it, the only difference is that software is not a tangible "thing" and thus cannot be "stolen". On the other hand, in Germany, for example, altering or suppressing data can be punished with up to two years in prison, depending on the severity.

It's a Global problem and while it may not be true in the USA there are actually 7.3 billion more people in the rest of the world with China, Asia and Russia apparently having the greatest numbers of piracy. USA represents less than 5% of the entire world.
Regardless, a large proportion of people in the world likely have at least one piece of software on their home computer they probably do not own.
