Nice tip I'll try to remember midi velocity in my next project. I found the problem I was having. One of the vst instruments I was using that said it was in mono, wasn't. So for that sound I had to render out to audio separate notes and chop it.
I don't have a treated room. But I find most subs in this genre in Voxengo Span hit just under 30. So I generally keep it there and do a quick few sub tests with reference tracks near the end of my mix/master.
I watched this a few days ago and have been trying it with my avantone on my desk. Gets me in the ballpark so I don't have to use my sub for that long.

I can't stress it enough.
Since the 80s I've always done it and always thought I was cheating or something, until I worked with others and saw that everybody else was doing it too!
