Some MWTM tutorials are helpful if you're new to most things, some are helpful even for advanced users.
You can always find anything new, there's always at least one thing you haven't known yet.
But these tutorials are mainly created to impress the viewers with huge great looking hardware studios. For many people this is also a great inspiration, so make the best of it as always in life. :)
Btw: My favorite MWTM tutorials are Mike Brauer's and the Lord-Alges', but everyone will surely have his or her own favorites.
In general I think most tutorials are hugely overpriced for what they offer. They are mainly set up to make money and less to teach you how to make money, but that's not worth mentioning.

Currently watching a mastering MWTM vid and the dude is trying to sound articulate while in the background the lyrics to the track are "bitch get the fuck off my dick"....

This series mostly go any where from watching a guy twiddle knobs/move faders while barely saying a word throughout to how this or that piece of gear/plugin gives that 'bit of mojo, warmth, vibe, mid punch, dirt, grind, polish, sheen, etc etc etc etc whatever' and tell stories about this and that. Some that I watch but FF a lot then chuck into trash, some I glance at and decide they go straight into trash.
One thing I did learn. None of these people mix a record the same way. There's no formula. There's a million ways to make a mix sound good and a million that suck. They have a rep for mixing in the good column.

Steve Albini was different in that he dresses like a shop mechanic and talks like he's gonna pull out a slide rule and write a bunch of schematics on a chalkboard. Hardcore analog.

Wow you guys are trolling about instructional videos? I've watched a lot of these MWTM and some are better than others. FWIW..

One of my favorites was this one: https://mixwiththemasters.com/phili
As a Gen Xer it's really endearing and refreshing to see what some are doing as they start their careers in this field - especially in terms of creativity and mixing ITB. As an engineer myself I'm more interesed in the young guns coming up than the crusty old boomers with 400 channel SSL boards with spinning rims on them. The Greg Wells ones are great too.

    Precisely.

MWTM just shows us the walkthrough. Many times there are few things to learn immediately but the whole essence of it is familiarizing yourself to the vast and different workflows, the cause-effect relationships, the mindsets. But Udemy watchers will probably never get it and make fun of those Masters.

If you do not know these masters, then clearly you are a newbie in this field of Audio engineering or maybe you are just a wanna be FL Studio DJ Producer who wants to make a slap house remix to be the next Imanbek.

Clearly my use of the rhetorical confused a few people here. Yes, I know who they are, I just object to the flamboyant use of the word "masters" when describing some (most) of these clowns. You referring to them as "masters" only illustrates my point. Does that make you their servant?

Your assumptions, though wildly off the mark, are mildly amusing so thanks for your contribution.

    Cheers.

VisionSierra dishes these out on the sister so if you don't like them just don't watch them. Not like you have to subscribe is it. If they're so bad I'm guessing you have better records than them to be in the position to call them out like that. So lets see what you've done? We're all still learning here

    Fair enough.

My OP clearly upset some people. Not my intention. I find them redundant, which may be to my detriment. Glad to see people glean something worthwhile from them.

Perhaps I need to watch the "right" ones.

I have no idea what "better" means in this case. I never assume that one must display an example of something "better" in order to criticise. Suffice to say, Ive made a good living from producing music. Its not always stuff that I like or that Im necessarily proud of, but its my gig.

It's definitely hardly educational. There's very little focus on details, and way too much focus on "this 20,000$ compressor knocking down 1db". I understand that in many cases songs are already tracked sounding good and don't need much mixing, so maybe show us the tracking instead of a guy just twiddling random faders for 20 minutes?

My favorite was the D'Angelo one, where the engineer sits in a big shiny room with 2 million $ worth of gear, talking about how "plugins just don't do it", and then just passing the tracks through a bunch of analog devices, with the mix sounding like absolute dogshit. It was like watching a snail deciding what he wants to eat, for 4 hours.

Also, is it just me or the roster of both MWTM and Puremix consists of a very few guys who, honestly, aren't really that interesting? the same names come up all the time, either ones who did some boomercore records in the 60's, or people who did the latest MTV shiny plastic tune. I hear so many great productions, there are so many amazing producers who are basically anonymous, and yet they constantly focus on those 10 or so dudes (and one quirky-but-did-nothing-interesting Sylvia Massey, for affirmative action). It almost looks like a members club and they just promote themselves over and over again. With some rare exceptions. Really just boring stuff that hardly ever shows extensive work.

It shows that you don't have to know everything there is under the sun to be successful in the audio engineering world. Practicing your craft is more valuable than theorizing about it. Most of these guys have established their own routines and workflows that work for THEM, that doesn't mean it has to be the right approach for everybody else.

I agree mostly. Once you have a certain amount of experience in audio production, the likelihood that you will learn something that is a complete revelation to you decreases drastically. For example: you can easily impress a total beginner with something like external sidechain compression, but this will hardly impress an already experienced guy. I watch these sort of videos mostly as an inspiration a la what they can do, I can do too with my tools. That's the cool thing: today you have access to essentially the same tools studio professionals use, except maybe for large outboard consoles and stuff like that, but as far as DAWs and plugin goes, you have it all available, even as freeware.

    I agree.

But the whole "masters" thing bugs me. Particularly when Im watching some minor hit jerk off talk about...well, nothing at all....

There are some incredible producers out there. Lets not confuse one with the other.
