For me, I guess the oldest is Yamaha's XG Checker. It checks MIDIs for errors and potential problems. I don't know any newer tool that does the same.

I have Logic 5.3 working in Win10 20H2, i didnt know in 2002/2003, what i was holding in hands, as i leeched it from overnet/edonkey2000.
actual back in the days you really had to figure out one software on your own, like i did with Fruity Loops 3. haha All the hours i spend in Fruity, try around lol

Hmm i still like the Logic ES2, its a simple yet very powerful synth for back in the days.

First, before to list some software, I should recognize, I always have difficulties choosing these instruments: piano, strings, guitar(both electric and acoustic)...
it depends on genre, style, key(!), solo or tough mix...
so, as I see the old stuff lovers are here,
then determine which soft piano (very old one!) was used for this piece:

    and the lists
    instruments:
    FM8
Roland GrooveSynth (it has a good trumpet achieving very realistic sound by tweaking its controls, plus very good drum/percussion sections)
    Hypersonic I
Edirol Orchestral (full orchestra in a pocket for the fast sketches)
Acoustica Mixcraft stuff (I used it in this song:

    TTS-1
    effects:
    Sonitus FX (especially their delay)
BGtech (for sidechain - it's the simpliest thing)
    Sonnox stuff

bx_digital – been using it since v1 and still do. Not the oldest version, but definitly one of the plugins I used the longest time.
