Yep, after SP2 Windows Vista was fine AFAIK. But the first versions were so deadly crappy that the name had to disappear. People hated it with a passion.
I'm not sure if this applies to AU, but for a developer to code for VST2 only a few files are needed that wrap the equivalent VST3 functionality.
    So it's like you said.
    In theory:  :winker:
    In practice: :crazy::suicide:

we'll need to wait for some very expensive decimal points to pass: vst3.01, vst3.201, ect.

totally understandable, and probably about time after 9 years of coexistence.

otoh it is kind of annoying that the older format is no longer supported by most host programs - same as with with TDM/RTAS vs. AAX.

keeping things downwards compatible doesnt hurt the development of new things at all.

i mean, wtf, certain VST3 hosts will be able to open AUs as VST but not VST2?;P

Please stop using VST2. VST3 is much better. The developers do not have access to the deprecated VST2 SDK.

We don't want to forget the people who stand behind the products. Thanks to the creators and inventors.

    About Steinberg

Karl Steinberg (born 15 April 1952 in Coesfeld, North Rhine-Westphalia) is co-founder of digitalmusician.net.
Together with Manfred Rürup he founded Steinberg Media Technologies in 1983 and helped to make digital audio editing popular through the Cubase program. Steinberg is also a founding member of the Fun and Mercy charity. Steinberg Research GmbH's first product, Multitrack Recorder for the Commodore C64, was one of the first MIDI-Sequencer available on the market in 1983. The MIDI protocol was presented to the public in the same year. The MIDI interfaces distributed with the Multitrack Recorder were self-soldered at the beginning. After Pro 16 for the C-64 and Pro 24 for the Atari ST, the music software Cubase appeared in 1989. In 1996, Steinberg brought the Virtual Studio Technology (VST) out. Today, VST is the most widely used interface in the audio sector.

    Software Developer
Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH has been owned by Yamaha Corporation since 2004.With the digital musician recorder from digitalmusician.net Karl Steinberg and Manfred Rürup developed a free audio recorder that allows you to record polyphonic music in real time via an internet connection

Steinberg founder honored in 2009 MIPA award presented at Musikmesse
Steinberg Media Technologies has announced that Karl 'Charlie' Steinberg, one of the two founders of the company and chief architect of many of its groundbreaking technologies and products such as VST, ASIO and Cubase, has been honored in the annual Music Industry Press Awards Ceremony with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

Andreas Stelling, Steinberg's General Manager, had this to say, "We extend our warmest congratulations to Charlie. Steinberg, the audio industry in general and the musical community at large owe him a great deal. His vision for technologies that empower anyone with a computer to create and produce music at any level from bedroom studios to platinum-selling artists is still powering the endeavors of the company today. And that this award comes in Steinberg's 25th year is especially fitting. I think I speak for everyone at Steinberg when I say that we're all both immensely grateful to him, and very proud that he has received this award."

Vst 3 FOR THE 21ST CENTURY!!
There are strategic limitations to Vst2.
Oscillation times of Butt-Flappers are constantly increasing. Vst 3 is the solution.

The real story behind the scene is that artists like Cardi B had started to challenge the Nyquist theorem.
Steinberg was faced with no option, but to go to the rim of Uranus, so to speak, and take one giant step for mankind.

The Nyquist Theorem states that in order to adequately reproduce a signal it should be periodically sampled at a rate that is 2X the highest frequency you wish to record. With images, frequency is related to structure size. Small structures are said to have a high frequency.
In the USA, as in the UK, the average butt sized has greatly increased since 1930.
Following Nyquist's theorum larger butt sizes, when flapped, should produce LOWER frequencies.
Innnovators like Cardi B have many physists in hard-on positions. These scientists are now working on VST 4 deep inside Gran Sasso Mountain Laboratories in Italy.
