    Just wanted to share some options with you...

    first of all, i'd never buy an external HDD for backup. that's just silly to overpay for an HDD stuck in a box.

    external hdd cases are my choice, and for those i'd recommend Zalman and Thermaltake:

    i have one Thermaltake box with eSATA;
    recently i bought Zalman ZM-MH200 U3 docking station, and a cheap ASUS USB3 controller
    http://www.zalman.co.kr/ENG/product/Product_Read.asp?Idx=408
    USB3 seems to be reasonable choice these days, so it doesn't really matter that it has no eSATA.

    for HDD I choose Seagate and WD, 2TB+

    just bought this guy a few months ago...

    if you going to use them to backup your samples, then you need to consider one thing - Spin Speed.
    because on large drives it's always lower :(
    so if you heading for at least 2tb, you probably end up with Spin Speed 5900RPM...

    doesn't matter if you load your samples into RAM;
    but when i use Kontakt, i usually load samples from my working HDD (7200RPM), and it works fine for me..

    hope this will be helpful. :bow:

    ...and please don't buy overpriced external drives :wink:

    Man, i could Def. use about a 2TB external, I already have 3 1TB's almost all full, and just had a 600 gig internal go tits up on me..

    Been shuffling this and that... here and there.. :snuffy:

    My Bro in law just bought a USB3 2TB External from Walmart for 99$

    I wish i had 99$ :snuffy:

    Still this looks to be a nice alternative, if not quite as convenient as walmart.

    I like to use HD'S made by Rane for the sole purpose of "music" man they are fast & quiet but pricey you get what you pay for tho :thumbsup: quality!

    I agree with most of what is said :)

    Those external hard drives cannot be trusted, they will fry and take all of your data with it. Also, running a raid system using your motherboard as the controller will drive you crazy when it fails, and it will fail. Yes, get a docking station put the biggest and fastest hard drive you can afford to back up your work. If you can't get the docking station and the hard drive just get the hard drive and put it in your computer and use it as a back up until you can get a docking station.

    Also, keep track of the year or month you bought or installed you main hard drive, because right around the time the warranty is to expire, you want a put in a new hard drive even if the old drive has not had any problems. sts rule (safe than sorry) Spin speed for large hard drives today is maxed at 7200rpm's. You can get 10000 rpm's but the size is smaller. I believe the biggest size on the public market is 3tb 7200rpm WD Green. (windows 7 rating 5.9)

    so agree!!! *yes*

    naah, they are much slower... only WD Black with that size has something around 7200rpm.

    so you suggesting to buy a separate RAID controller?... hmm, it's probably worth it, but really what's the point since almost the same controller is already installed on system board? :dunno:

    If your external controller dies, you just have to replace it. If your integrated controller dies, you have to replace your MB. Not the same price...

    Of course, if you're not afraid to search for a new controller and play with a solder iron, it's up to you... *yes*
