In the past, music was the goal, and other components were joining in to help the music shine and catch people’s fancy, but now things other than music hook into and play major roles, and music is only used to fill in the blanks.

When something doesn't play a major role, attention to it decreases and its quality decreases day by day.

I wouldn't go so far to say that pop idol singers image is more important than their music, but definitely more important than their voices most of the cases.
The song composition, that is another subject. Many pop singer stars don't compose (most of) their songs.
Image sex-appeal has mattered too much in music since a long time. I mean look at Elvis. Not that wasted casino version, when he was at his best lol
Now we live in the Instagram/Spotify era. That makes things worse but not new.
