Assuming the previous owner had bought Logic Pro (ie. v9) dvds and installed them.
Yes. Don't go beyond. Recommend goins as far as Sierra first.
And if you wanted Logic 9 working up to date with its software update bundles then you would actually have to start at Snow Leopard and go as far as 10.6.8 whilst doing the Logic 9 updates.
And then Logic 9 will still work on the updated OSs.
No. But you can have up to Logic 10.4.4 on Sierra. They are on 10.5.1 or something now.

Your processor is fast enough to run a daw, just make sure you max out the ram if you can.
8GB is minimum for daws and a sampler. 16GB to start really.

Why u can still find Logic 9 on the internet, so what do u mean? With a few clicks i found the "NOWAYOUT" release and its downloadable and v9.1.6 as update.

Also Logic v10 is very easy to find.

9.1.8 was the last one. Plus you need all the downloadable softwareupdatebundles prior to installing the software updates.

The member who started the thread only needs Logic Pro 10.4.4, not Logic Pro 9.
But I mentioned it because this gives the best of both worlds in regards the performance of a 2009 iMac!
And because the installer for L9 has to be done whilst the system is still 32/64Bit to be able to do all the updates before making the system into 64Bit only, with going via (I think) Mountan Lion, El Capitan, and then to Sierra and beyond.
Do not touch Mavericks. Do not touch Yosemite.

I have given up the idea of taking it. My friend was so surprised that I didn’t want his iMac for free
Thanks for your opinions. They were very helpful.

I have a 2009 mac pro tower that is STILL my main work machine and it has been just fine.

flashed firmware to 5,1, upgraded ram to 64GB, have multiple SSD's with multiple boot systems,....

It works just fine, and I do some very track/plugin intensive work.
