Hit Songs of 2020

  1. Sorry Jim. Blame the internet for not correctly implying that it was a bit of a joke. I wish I'd looked like Justin when I was his age. I'd have done a lot better with the ladies than the fat lot of slags I ended up with as my options ran out at 5am as last drinks were called. Hope that translates from Australian into universal English.

That analogy doesn't work at all. Beato is a music producer AND a highly skilled musician, not a random guy who just listens to the same old rock station driving to work.

That was great. His Marshall stack daaamn!

He was great. He might not listen it to it on the regular but you can tell he loves music. Easily noticing the difference between an "older" musician who looks like they are happy and doing well, they still like all music. Compared to those here that are "older" bitter and unsuccessful that just hate on it.

I have two sons, 32 and 22 years old, they produce music, listen to "current" music and always invite me to listen to their preferences, it's a chance for me to be able to exchange the various points of view, I also make them discover current things or not....
It's true that if, for example, I play Joni Mitchell & Jaco Pastorius, an incredible musical union, they find it hard to get carried away, it's not formatted, rather hybrid...and very personal but musically not "old or old-fashioned".
As for me, I enter their musical universe without any problem, the approach is much easier, at least in the current musical trends, without taking away anyone's talents.
I believe that an auditory education is primordial, children growing up in families "educated" musically with classical, jazz, rock, soul, punk and all the rest have a nice advantage, learning to listen does not mean liking everything and anything, does not mean criticizing for criticizing ....
The fact remains that the sequences of the video at the beginning of this thread are an equal sequence without salt and pepper, you cut the audio of this video in 30 slices and you put them back together in the disorder it will sound exactly the same.

  7. I've also had the benefit of children whose tastes have introduced me to music I would never otherwise have heard. My iTunes library of over 1,500 albums contains music from the 60's to now.... and you know what? I don't listen to the old stuff very often. I like new music! My fave play list in the car is all from 2000 on. I don't have any of the Pop artists that make the billboard top 40 because, y'know. Ick. But there's great new music. I listen to it. I make it as well. I'm a grandfather. It's not a filter to new music and I'm not obsessed with the past.

Granted, he's a confessed metal-guitar lover. But he does give compliments to most of the top-10 in his second video. Almost the opposite as the first. It's a shame it's deleted.

People usually innovate when they feel that old styles don't meet their needs.

    1. What weaknesses do old styles have that don't satisfy the new generation?
    2. What do the new generation have in mind to express in their music and feel that old styles don't have enough potential?
    3. What would today's music look like if 808 didn't exist?

Well....some people like it......some people don't. Some people hate it!!!

Me? I just get frustrated with it....There's some very good songs being "over-produced" and made to sound soulless. Stripped of any "air" and flattened to the point whereby it's extremely boring to listen to them.....
I blame the people who invented auto-tune, quantizing and cut and paste loops!! :winker: (this makes me a hypocrite of sorts as I use loop based drums with some tweaking, but only out of necessity. I don't have access to real drummers or the money needed to hire real drummers etc etc!)

Seriously though, we've all still (probably) used them to "improve" our recordings because that seems to be the expectation now, no matter what genre of music you produce. And it's all too easy to fall into the trap of overdoing it or relying on it. And that creates a complete lack of tension in music today.....And I was always taught the most important thing in music was to create tension to keep people listening....And I'm not sure that people actually LISTEN to the above stuff, rather than just "consume"....If you know what I mean..! :)

I like music a little rough around the edges....nothing is, and should be, perfect haha....

    Anyways....just my opinion!!

I dare to say that all the blame must be put on LOOP.
It is Satan that has haunted today's music.
    I'm not kidding.

  12. I feel that a flaw in how we interpret music making is the advent of the DAW. It differs from tape in an extreme sense. Tape runs from a start point with nothing to suggest where in the track you might be. A DAW shows you that your 16 bar verse is about to end, so please cut and paste your chorus. Quantize, pitch correct, apply automation and....done.
So, are loops responsible? I'm guilty of using them as a short cut. Did it impede my creativity? Most certainly. What should I do? I don't know.

We should find other ways to make music. It's a big challenge for everyone but indispensable. Loop terminology has to be dismissed from the music world (has served enough and now is the time for its retirement), otherwise, all talents will burn. Satan is not joking with anyone.

The energy inside me flows when I listen to good music. This energy doesn't belong to me, but belongs to good music that by listening to it, a small part of it is transmitted to me.

The music industry has absorbed all the energy and left nothing for good music. The only way to absorb energy is to approach the music industry and interact with it. The music industry, like all other industries is ruthless and its purpose is just to survive itself and never understands the good music.
