Upgraded my Hackintosh Catalina to Big Sur, no problem, everything works like a charm except sugar bytes.

 

Upgraded to Big Sur and can't for the life of me get the Arturia Collection v8 AUs to work properly with Logic Pro. I can see them in the plugin manager but can't add them to my tracks. When I go to rescan the AU validator gets caught on "updating AU properties". Anyone else seen this issue?

The person you quoted was able to roll back and get better performance because the hardware was from an earlier OS.
Big Sur running on a 6 year old hardware that was meant for the OS of then will take more resources.
If you buy new hardware now, it will cope better with the new OS that will come with it.

The only worry about Big Sur for us is if everything we've had before software wise is working and supported yet.
It's not really about "trust" imo.

I'm still on Mojave on the highest spec mid 2015 15" (the one with the made to order i7 4980HQ) and it works like a charm even when undervolted, Crystal (Has)Well temperatures aside (though it's partly my fault, I keep forgetting to clean it up and replace the paste)

I installed Catalina when I first bought the machine in early 2020 and it was a mess, the thing took ages to boot up and there were odd hiccups and stutters throughout the OS. I thought that maybe I needed to reinstall it again and I'm sure that would've fixed it but I decided to downgrade to Mojave and bam, everything works fine. I know that it's an older machine but it's still a very capable one. Friend of mine with almost the same exact config (4870HQ) installed Big Sur and aside from some incompatible VSTs he hasn't had any performance problems on it.

IMHO most of the Haswell+ machines are still more than good enough and so is Mojave as an OS. The only thing you might be missing out on with Mojave are updates to Apple apps (Logic, FCPX, etc) but as far as plugins go I'm pretty sure the vast majority of them are still gonna support Mojave for a long while.

TL;DR Stability > everything else IMHO.

I wasn't. And it certainly can't be called old hardware, at least not in terms of capabilities.
I got the Macbook with a fresh install of Catalina that needed to go through the initial setup, that's why I even bothered with it to begin with. I wasn't made aware of the incompatibilities and such until after I tried to install stuff. It *is* my first Apple machine after all.

But then, it's always been in flux. Like, forever!
Since OS9 and Classic! haha. The last 20 years!
But the flow of change within all this has been changing at exponential rates.
So it's no surprise that a newer OS compared to an older, (not "old", sorry!) OS will always use more resources ie ram and cpu.
So it forces you to want newer OSs.
Which means buying new hardware.
As a muso or engineer with a mac, it's very important to NOT be at the "bleeding edge"...of commercialism!

I am on Mojave and everything is fine.
Big Sur is a forced update for those who want to use the new M1 processors, which are certainly better than intel (so far we agree).
Now, is there any rational motivation for intel processor users like me to update OS?
Are there credible performance test charts to rely on, or is Big Sur better just for a "personal feeling"?
Currently, this thread hasn't convinced me at all to switch to Big Sur.

 

Performance-wise I'm sure Catalina would've been fine after a completely clean reinstall but I didn't bother with it since I wanted 32-bit support and better compatibility with emulators and such. RAM and CPU usage-wise the two were more or less identical, even with all of my startup garbage. (Logitech stuff, LittleSnitch, NTFS For Mac, Volta, Bartender, iStat, etc) Maybe Mojave was a bit lighter but nothing that'd make me choose one over the other. With all of my startup garbage I was still under 3GB of RAM on both OSes, it's just that Catalina kept having weird hiccups and whatnot. Hell, oddly enough Mojave keeps getting FASTER on bootup after every security update. OSX doesn't like my Intel SSD with a generic controller on it (I'm looking to upgrade to an OWC Aura sometime in the future or even an original Apple SSD in good condition) and yet it boots in 20 seconds flat from the instant I press the power button. Even on a fresh Mojave 10.14.6 install it took ~10 seconds longer. Now if only my Windows machine did that..
Big Sur on the other hand seems to be quite a disaster, definitely not gonna touch that unless it's in a VM.

Most people I know that upgraded from Mojave/Catalina to Big Sur have been pretty disappointed. Even on much more recent machines than mine. I suspect that Apple didn't bother testing Big Sur that much on Intel hardware. I mean, why would they?

 

That's just because the OS is doing indexing in the background for a while. It's common with any new OS.
Your fans will probably go to nothing eventually too.
If you had longer sessions, it would have dealt with it all by now.
But will deal with it whenever it gets a chance.

your macbook pro is not officially supported(Late 2013 and later required) but it seems like you have a late 2014 imac, if it is, your imac is compatible with big sur.

But i can't guarantee a smoother experience you have to check it yourself. audio plugin compatibility is fine with bigsur, almost all plugins work except very old ones.

Choice is yours.

 

All plugs work well with Catalina on the MacBook Pro until I restored from a clone because I tried to install trillion by spectrasonics, even the terminal commands for plug in alliance work on the MacBook.

so for BigSur I'm curious if the same will apply; have you tried the plugin alliance terminal commands to get those plugs working?

 

spectrasonics plugins are working perfectly. what plugin alliance ones are you talking about and what are those termnial commands you talking about? if it's about codesigning no prob.
