can anyone recommend me a good free anti virus program?

I had Kaspersky which actually wasnt bad, but i'd like to choose something else for different reasons.

guess on windows? Stay with Windows Defender (built in, better than any third party and does not interfere with system).

Free - MalwareBytes (Windows 7) and Windows Defender/Security (WIndows 10)

I've been using Windows Defender for years now, plus TinyWall (small footprint firewall) and an ocasional Malwarebytes scan. Great combo...It's really hard to get viruses these days unless you do something really stupid, anyway.

Windows Defender is fine, but it may be best to create exclusions for various folders, particularly OpenOffice (from personal experience it crashes Calc) and its own Program Files folder (usually: C:\Program Files\Windows Defender).
I have several drives and MANY folders excluded from being scanned...

Widows Defender takes off ALL cracked / hacked / keygens software etc. If you have all legit software, Defender is probably OK. (It's the first thing I remove when doing a Windows install!)

I do not use my music PC to download ANYTHING. Mail, downloads are on the PC I'm working on this moment - NOT for music. When I download anything to update / add on. I test it first on a 300GB hard drive that has just a basic install and I can just restore it from backup if anything goes amiss. I use Reg Organizer to install and trace all software, so I can remove ALL of it if I want do do, registry keys, the lot.

I don't have ANY anti-virus software running at all. The only one I would consider buying (but I don't need anti-virus) would be Malwarebytes. The free version will detect virii, but not remove them once the trial has expired. So far in 6 years, I've never had a virus.

I firmly believe that the people who write the anti-virus software actually WRITE most, if not all of the new ones, to keep their cash registers ringing merrily. The entire world is corrupt now. I used to use AVG prior to 6 years ago, when one of their updates actually put a virus on my computer.

Most cracked software, plugins these days Windows Defender doesn't touch. And I purposely scan everything with it. Nearly all of the R2R wave went through no problems. Some keygens you have to momentarily disable it which is really easy to do. Install then turn it back on. Or if it detects something you don't want it to, you can just click allow. Give it another chance it's not that bad.

 

This is the best advice, believe me. Always FOLLOW THE MONEY. Without new virii, AV would go broke. How to you stop going broke? Create more virii. Follow the money.

YOU are making them rich. If everyone stopped falling for their crap and everyone stopped opening everything they see, there would be no more virii.

 

If you're a pirate, Antivirus soft is pointless.
If you're legit, Antivirus soft is pointless.
The only meaningful use of Antivir. I see is cases of total noobs going legit.

 

Since I gave up on AV, 10yr. ago, I can't imagine the hassle of having one on my system.
But I remember times when I felt that every second between fresh Win install and the time it takes to install AV was lethal. Like, every hacker in the world wants access to my top secret yify movies and kontakt libraries and I have to make sure they don't get it so easily. :D

 

I don't even have a legit copy of Windows, but I could run Windows Defender. You just have to explicitly tell it to leave your warez alone.

That said, I'm like many other people here. I don't bother with an anti-virus program. I didn't run one for years -- then I got hit by ransomware and installed Comodo for about a year. But I've dumped it again and now I just run the Windows Firewall and manage it using Malwarebytes Windows Firewall Control.

Life's too short to be waiting for antivirus software. Just be more careful about what you install.

 

Comodo, where the firewall is the star. Default deny system. There's a learning curve though. You have the option of using AV and FW, just AV or just FW.

 

360 Total Security is good. Low CPU usage and easy to use.

 

I use Defender as well, I'm on Windows 10 and up to date (I also use a virtual machine to make sure something's clean before I install it on the host). Although if it says R2R, I don't care how many warnings Defender throws at me; I'm still installing it. Otherwise I'm pretty paranoid and cautious about what I download.
