Collaboration - Do you normalize the tracks or make sure everything is within the 0dbvu?

    Hmm. I'd say the opposite. Because they are just doing the same as you or I as I see it.
    Others, (neither of us here) probably due to the tape days and analogue desks, still like to see meters hitting hard! lol.
    Totally pointless ITB. Especially prior to mix.

    Yes. Most electronic stuff eventually heads into the realm of the loudness wars for people, so I will normally mention something about not sending me stuff like that. I usually don't collaborate with anyone who uses Logic, so I'm usually the one assembling all the work from the tracking stage and then doing the preliminary arrangement and mixdown in Logic. I can open projects from most DAW's besides PT, so I'll normally move the loops into Logic, as opposed to completed stems. Generally, I will re gain stage everything. Some things I'll get samples which have been deliberately analog desk clipped, but getting everything around -3dB is preference. I'll usually bypass most or all of the plugins used.

    this one is a bit tricky, which is mostly my fault, we agreed to do it part by part, I start, then he continues, send back to me, I add, send back until we both happy. Do you think this isn't a good way to collaborate especially with strangers ? Or just do it half, then another collaborator finish it, then mix ? I totally have no idea how it is done, I've been asking around, but most of my friends are mixers, the way they collaborate mostly finishing others work.

    @No Avenger If I'm understanding the pictures correctly, you are saying all those plugins don't show the same amount of input even been sent the same signal (same level) ? Are those plugins calibrated at the same level, I know Waves has adjustable calibration. Can you please explain which one is what ?

    If you aren't using vu, what is atleast the guide for you for keeping everything workable, RMS or peak level for all the tracks ? just I can try it next time and see the result. Anyway I've been using S1 lately and liking the MixFX feature and it is been advisable to be careful with the level of individual tracks to get the best result from the MixFX, because the effect is applied to individual channel instead of the bus.

    I haven't collaborated with anyone in forever (so no advice from me there), but I'd say it sounds like you just ran into God's Gift to Music. Best just to move on from them, as apparently that fellow's shit doesn't stink. Doesn't seem like a good person to work with. Hopefully your next crack at it goes a fair bit better.

    Also, I'll be honest, I do mostly electronic music, but I hate OTT. To each his own though.

    I agree with what @reliefsan told you. Indeed, when you are collaborating, there must be a mutual agreement as to how things will be done in order to achieve the goal. The most important aspect of collaboration is for everyone to be on the same page. I have been collaborating with others for over 40 years, and the early stags are the most important. Right away you sense whether it would be collaboration or a thug of war. Again, everyone needs to be on same page. For example, last week I started collaborating with another member here. From the get go I knew we would get along fine because there was a mutual understanding and professional respect with a clear set of goals.
    Now to your question, in the early stages, I really dont pay much attention to levels (as long as I have control of the dynamic range) or FX unless it is extremely necessary. Getting the song structure and content is what matters to me the most at that point. All the time spent on fiddling with the mixing console can be better used towards the creative process. This approach also benefits the mixing stage because it forces you subconsciously to choose sounds that even in the rough can coexist with one another. Also, keep in mind that normalizing is not a shortcut around going into the DAW or recording with a proper signal. Conversely, the way to stay away from normalizing is to go into the DAW at or to record at a proper level from the the start.

    If you are both on a different DAW, my thinking is that during the tracking stage you should just make unprocessed waves. correctly recorded ones. no plugins in the project. the whole benefit of collaboration is additional creativity via speed. making the files easy to transfer back and forth quickly is important. "admin work" can kill a session like nothing else.

    Late for the party, but I haven't normalized in 13 years as a result of not doing it to 24bit and 16bit audio (where normalization is degenerative. Yes, I know internal is 32bit FP and even 64bit sometimes, but I rather stick to not normalize at all).
    Gain-staging goes a long way.

    Yep, that why adjusting any signal to 0VU with a VU meter is useless, ATME.

    Err, the Waves calibration is adjustable? Didn't know that. [​IMG] So it was the default one.

    I use peak gainstaging only and have my channels meter switched to input. Besides working with 32bit FP, this way I can always monitor the pre fader levels and avoid clipping.

    I personally never normalize, I always feel that I lose the dynamics, the soul and the sensitivity of the file, as long as the file is normalized everything else must follow this normalization, I am a common mortal in audio and not a professional so it remains a personal point of view.
