There exist some academic fields aiming to answer your question, and it's safe to say that we have done quite some progress already. Studying music cognition, music and mathematics, music and sociology (in a lesser degree music and neuroscience / neuroaesthetics).. These three fields will give you a good deal of knowledge on how music works. In a nutshell, and imho, it really is just a dual action - combination of an auditory stimulus of optimal complexity (maths / brain part), dressed with extramusical meaning (lyrics, sounds reminding u an event of childhood etc / psychology part).

TBH, I'm looking for just a single and unique description. In combinations there're always contradictions and I've seen them a lot.

My attempt for a singular description would just be: Music is emotional information conveyed through an auditory stimulus. That's all it is imo. Of course this description is now very generic. Hundreds of academic works come out every year and they focus on one area or another.. My point is that how music works it's not a really a secret, but it's a very fascinating thing and one can study a lot about it in and find answers. If you are honestly curious you can check these fields in the other reply. Just don't go into the philosophical side, what is art, is it a property of the object or of the perceiver etc.. I don't think you'll get any closer via that route. Hope this helps

 

Music works by dynamically combining harmony, rhythm & sound to (if done right) resonate meaning between creator(s) and audience. I have no doubt that this has been written thousands of times. However, music is not words is it?

The application of thought alone ultimately renders barren music because truly great music always hits emotionally before becoming subject to critical analysis. You gotta feel a vibe when writing and only 'think' when you edit/refine after.
