That will happen if Bill Gates own Steinberg. In other news, I just noticed that somehow Twitter's Jack Dorsey just bough majority shares and now his company kinda own Tidal.

oh f*ck that. I hope I do not have to be online all the time. No subscription either. If there is way I can run Cubase also on my laptop for creative purpose without the dongle BS that would be great. But I really do not hope we have to be online all the time to use it.

Highly unlikely because "professionals" out there like their music production machine to not have internet connection for some reason. It would be a bad business move.

nah they noticed, there was a way to use the trail version until forever with all features unlocked?

I mean using dongle service costs a lot of money and peeps are tired of it i guess ...

okay dongle free and sub-free would be cool, i mean this ARA tech integrated into cubase, its heaven almost.

Are you talking about PT ? I thought the perpetual license allow the user to stay offline (no need to log in). TBH I don't know really, never use it other than PT First that needs you to log in for its cloud and stuff.

"the future will be dongle free"

Hopefully the future also has more than one activation for my $500 license. Idc about the dongle thing. I already had to buy one.

The news was first publicised in their twitter channel SteinbergMedia

Curiously enough many of their customers worried that this would also hint a subscription model introduction. Nothing pointed in that direction though at least not based on what was said in that particular twitter post.

Why so much hype. They said "we are thinking about alternative protection" 3 years ago. THREE YEARS AGO. Even if next .0 or .5 version will be dongle free, it doesn't mean that it will be reversed and released.

Interesting that they announce this after their protection scheme has been demolished by hackers. Too little, too late?

In any case I am glad for the legit Cubase users.

The thing is, personally, I've gotten so used to using Reaper during the last 13 years of using it, and working with Cubase sometimes at different places, watching it change, only affirmed my decision to continue using Reaper. I wouldn't start working with Cubase again even if I got it for free, really. I would miss Reaper's easy and so absolutely flexible routing the most, but also stability and efficiency.

However, I am very interested in what's going to happen with Cubase because most of the people I work with use it.

15 years ago they introduced the dongle system on the mac saying that it would be easier than using CD & serial or floppy keys, and while for ilok is actually is, for their dongles it never was.

yes, exactly. if it makes it more difficult for legit users to install a cracked copy, then it is dumb. :)

for one of my apps, which i got for free, i need to close the cracked copy (i.e. use another computer, the one with the registered copy) in order to open their website. that is not very useful.
