Well, I'm not a genius with transient shapers, and most of the time if I need one (which is mostly drum sounds), I'll use the one in Battery.

You can get that in plugin form, try Transient Master by Native Instruments. At least it's simple enough for a dummy like me and does the job.

Transient Shapers are unnecessary if you chose proper Sounds and shape them with EQ, ADSR /AHD Envelopes and Compression.

    Or upward expansions or so.

By the way, spiff is not a bad tool at all

Fission/Physion, Spiff, SPL Transient Designer/SPL Attacker, Multitransient.

I should check out the EaReckon one though.

Normally suggesting that someone does not need it comes off snobby,
But in reality I have to agree with 5teezo en lil' pump milk.

I rarely boost transients. I think that is because I compress a lot.
If channels gets 6 db reduction, I get to choose how many transients survive with the attack knob.

Also my drum samples get edited in a sampler that has adsr.

What if you're dealing with recorded material that you've no control over? They can be definitely useful there.
I've also used a shaper when dealing with roughly recorded foley, make footsteps fit the video better and so on.
And why not, they can be useful for sound design purposes.

I like the SPL Transient Shaper Plus for quick shaping. Sometimes SPIFF. Heard good things about the Newfangled Punctuate, but yet to try it, looks a little complicated, with more comprehensive controls.

Rarely need one but Kilohearts gets the job done for me. I don't usually think of KHs as having exceptional sound quality (good enough but won't knock your socks off) but their transient shaper sounds more natural to me than the others I've used.

My favorite Transient shaper is DS-10 Drum Shaper from XLN, it works on Virtually everything, from vocals to Basses, to clicky sources even on the basic setting, but the best and most natural one at least to my ears is the one from Softube.

The best one I've used so far is probably the simplest, which is the one included in the Kilohearts bundle. Awesome little transient shaper.

I like Transgressor 2, from Boz, but it's way more complex and most of the times not as effective.

That's very interesting man, thanks for sharing. I'm the complete opposite. In that I would rather tame or boost transients using a transient shaper rather than using a compressor if I can help it most the time. I use compression more for character but do reach for it purely for dynamic range too sometimes.

For quick simplicity: kilohertz Transient Shaper
    For interactivity: Waves Smack Attack

DS-10 or NI's one. if they were unnecessary why would they be used by so many (credible) people? snobby imo
key tool for drum samples, don't need to spend all day on the envelopes when I just need it to slap a bit harder and it takes 2 seconds, put it on, adjust, sound goods, move on.
