Man, so far you keep talking about vanilla Win10. Why bother? Nobody but total noobs uses Windows as it comes from MS.
The whole internet is flooded with apps and scripts, to stop MS telemetry since day 1 of its release. A good number of modded Win10 versions have telemetry removed. We have posted links to these hundreds of times...

What do you think MAC OSX has been doing for years!!!
How do you think the App store works? OSX updates checks? There are daemons running talking to Apple servers!
This is the same thing with the Windows app store which almost every Windows 10 user disables.

Once you prep windows 10 its done, forget it, do your work and sell it. Adding the blacklist of Apple servers IP's also blocks OSX daemons from talking to Apple.

Windows 10 is copying MacOS to a T.

 

@danfuerth you seem to be a busy person, so I totally understand if you say no, but I agree with a lot of things you said... so may I ask you if you’d mind doing a guide to your take on preparing windows 10 for semi-stupid persons as me?.

I don't think this thread has anything to do with macOS, and even then I'd probably refrain taking Mac advice from someone who can't use chmod.

 

From what I gathered; when you want to make music with low latency within windows, you need to use a desktop instead of a laptop.

I agree. Less is more!!! People don't understand all that stuff on a MOBO takes up irq's and resources checks for the cpu to monitor. Input output IO. Not to go off topic a little but that is what I have been saying about the stupid Cubase dongle. I bet my money on it that it constantly keeps checking for a valid license while you are using Cubase which along with other stuff bog's down your PC.

This is just false. Between the very first scripts released, one link (which i posted as back as i first registered here), lists all the MS addresses that telemetry is sent to. You can add these manually to your router's block list, and stop any MS outgoing traffic that's sent out once and forever. And this should pretty much count as a hardware block.

This would be the safest bet on the planet, since the Cubase dongle reportedly checks at least 5 times/sec.

 

Good question, I'm not sure which is if its the heat over latency...

Thats interesting can you send me such a script which blocks outgoing traffic? Oh and perhaps you also have one for incoming traffic.

You know I am so glad you said that honestly.. I had a big back and forth with a different user about a year ago on the exact same thing.
He kept telling me it doesn't matter. Well multiply that by 500 for other plugins and you have a lot of overhead that is not needed.

I wouldn't consider it as evil. More like -ish, if you know what i mean hehehe. Surely you are right about the checks but you can check any system with Cub + plugs idling with no project loaded. You won't see more than 1% cpu load and this should stand for old cpus, for newer cpus it should be 0%. So, is the dongle too efficient ? Naaah. Even 1% is a lot when you think what it is. Even if users can't physically understand the dongle's presence, loading the system -as you said- with unnecessary processes is a negative effect, one that should be avoided if possible.
Despite all this, the Cubendo community holds a good number including meself, although CubPro is not my preffered daw and not installed in my main comp anyway.

These are the addresses. Not IPs. You have to get their ips manually and then add them to your router's blocking list. Even if you block these from the OS, Win 10 will bypass the block. Yes it's some work alright but you only do it once. You can make a script to automate "get IPs from addresses" if you like:

DNS Client - Windows 10 Service

The DNS Client service (dnscache) caches Domain Name System (DNS) names and registers the full computer name for your computer. If the service is stopped, DNS names will continue to be resolved. However, the results of DNS name queries will not be cached and the computer's name will not be registered. If the service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

You need to disable this service in Computer Management.

The only reason why the DNS service should be running is if you are running a website off that Computer or running the Server edition which of course requires the DNS for caching.
With all these services disabled you should be at around 50 or so Services running no more than that.
This includes already services for VMware, VirtualBox which run a couple of services.

You should check your systems for the services in Computer Management, you will be surprised.



How I setup Windows 10 after Installation

-Puppy linux and delete what you need

-Disable all the junk services

-DISABLE the DNS service

-Go to your network connections and uncheck all the crap on there, leave only IPv4 and check only File Sharing if you are using that at home ( I recommend FTP for file transfers anyways).

- HOSTS file, add your entries in this format (now that DNS is disabled and IPV6 can't be used to sneak out)

Example:

- Make sure hidden files and system files are always visible
Also uncheck "hide file extensions" you need the extensions to be always visible!!!

-Use GPEDIT and disable Windows Update, Antivirus and other Toys R' US features of Windows 10

-Use the Windows GOD mode ( Win7- Win10 still has it)
Make a folder on your desktop and name it "“GodMode. {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}”
This will give you all the Windows settings from control Panel and everything else in a big list right inside that new folder. This is a critical feature that I always have on.

-Add the right click "Take Ownership" to your right click menu ( Google this)
This should be mandatory in all Windows used in Workstation mode.

-Take ownership of the C:\Program Files\WindowsApps folder
This is where those nasty Windows 10 Fisher Price apps are stored, like that cheating no good Cortana who left me a "John Deere" letter, she was of no use anyways, deleted her before she exposed my pron searches online...

Finally Image the system ( many freeware tools out there)
Recommend Macrium Reflect, the freeware edition will do Cloning and that is what you need to have, an image of that drive unto another one as a backup. I recommend backing up Every week specially if you try a lot of "Hot Plugins and Applications"



- For Audio and Video NEVER USE YOUR MAIN OS Drive for recording it should be cemented on your HEAD ALWAYS USE A SEPARATE Drive for your media and recording.
