I am in the process of setting up my studio again & it has got me wondering...what is the ideal height for your monitor speakers?

Personally I have had mine like this in the photo attached however, recently I have moved the desk and there is no room for my monitor stands so I am having to mount them on the shelf on my desk

 

The ideal monitor height = your ears' height when you sit down your chair

Remember! It must be and equilateral triangle between your speakers and your head.

 

It's not really a subjective thing to be honest.

1. Your monitors should be further away than your arm's length. If you can stretch out your arm from where you sit and touch them they're way too close.
2. The tweeters of your monitors should be level with your ears.
3. As webhead said, the monitors and your head should form a triangle, with the lines meeting just behind your head (so that the Tweeters are aimed directly at your ears, not your face)
4. Avoid putting the sub at 50% of your room height. (You might have to flip your monitors upside down to achieve this)

There might be more I'm forgetting right now. Judging from your pictures the monitors are waaay too close. You need to hear your room, not have your speakers blasting directly into your ears like a shotgun.

The disadvantage of doing it the "proper" way is that you'll have to use a lot of space in your room as just space. So if you have a tiny room or you're in your bedroom this might be difficult to do. But do it as best as you can.

must is a bit strict, some prefer an unequal triangle wider than deep, try it.


...and the 38% 'rule' is also a starting point, actual measurements and listening is beneficial either
