I just learn that 5800x current price is almost the same as 3900x/3900xt, which makes me wonder why and looking for answer if 5800x is better than 3900x for music production.. I've seen on Youtube how 3900x amazingly perform on Ableton .. but for 5800x, there's only gaming comparison between the two processors.. seems like 5800x fps hits better than on 3900x but CPU hits is lower on 3900x side.. i'm not sure how this gaming benchmark is relevant to daw benchmark.. would you get 3900x or 5800x and why? :shalom:

Absolutely the 5800x. They're both great processors, but the 5800x is able to boost a smidge above 5.0 Ghz.
Additionally, if you're able to get an Asus motherboard, with the new BIOS, it is now possible to set an all-core overclock, and still have precision boost. So it'd still boost single threads up to around that 5.0 Ghz level when thermals etc permit.

Additionally, each CCX core now has access to its own cache memory. Before two CCX cores shared one cache on 3900x / xt
If you're using a NUMA aware DAW such as cubase, with vst3 plugins, individual instances of plugins will be assigned to individual ccx cores, each with their own cache. The hyperthreading is extremely optimized.

So If you're building a PC, get an Asus x570 Motherboard (I have Crosshair Hero VIII wifi), a RTX 3080, also ASUS IMO (stock is coming this week many places) and get that 5800x. Set an all core overclock of 4.5 Ghz @ 1.32 V
Enable precision boost, so you can get single thread boost clocks to around the 5.0 ghz level

Since that video was released the allcore OC + single thread PB works on many ASUS boards with the newest BIOS update
    Get a good cooler
get a 1000W power supply if you get a 3080

This machine will crush anything you throw at it
    Happy new years. Cheers!

@Agaveman I'm trying to figure out what's best for me to upgrade from Ryzen 3 3200g.. on ASRock B450m Steel Legend, 32gb RAM (2133) and 600w PSU... within a limited budget ofc..

I just learn that 5800x doesn't include Thermal solution.. would 3200g included Thermal solution (Wraith Prism) be enough? Seems like I will have to spend another more to get graphic card too. I'm currently on 3200g built in GPU (Vega 8).

3900x does include Thermal Solution (Wraith Prism with RGB), so it seems like I'll have to search just for graphic card..

My primary goal is for seamless music production moment.. like having about 20-30 midi tracks using various VSTi (mainly kontakt, maschine, synths + others).. also having them mixed with mixing plugins and doing mastering on the fly..

My secondary side task would be for Adobe software from image, video to 3d editing.. perhaps exploring Unity too as a side hobby.. I'm thinking of 1660 ti graphic card for this because I heard some integration with NVidia tech and Adobe software that can be take advantage of (from 1660 ti)..

My budget is about around that 3900x + 1660 ti.

What's best option for me to do it with 5800x within the same budget? Seems like I'll be hopeless because looks like 600w PSU needed to be change too..

I just hope to be able to do that seamless music production moment.. not for playing games..

p/s: Happy new year to you too :shalom:

I upgraded to a 3900x from a 6600k and all I can say is WOW. I really wanted to snag a 5950x for an overkill machine, but you know how that goes... I decided to get a 3900x to hold me over with my new build and now I don't even feel the need for more. Running Cubase 11 in THICC projects with lots of kontakts, while tracking guitar through plugins at 64 buffer without a single pop or stutter.

@Futurewine If your Adobe use is Premiere Pro and AE, I'd personally get a 256 bit gpu. 1660 ti is a great gpu. But it's 192 bits. For many things this does not matter, but for many CAD/CAE software 256 bit is required. Also helps with rendering. 70 series is budget 256 bit. Personally I'd prefer a 1070 ti, but if you don't do any CAD or rendering the 1660 ti is great.

Just upgrade to the 5800x, use your wraith cooler for now. Don't overclock it yet, and the cooling will be fine for now.
The 5800X will be easier on your 600w power supply than the 3900x. After the 5800x, I'd go for a 70 series gpu. if you can find a good deal maybe even 2070 or 2070 super. If not, 1660 ti is indeed the next budget choice to go with...but if you're going to spend as much as a 1660 ti costs, I highly recommend trying to wait and save a bit longer for a 3080. The price to performance ratio of the 3080 is best. You don't need it for audio, but it allows you to work on more gpu demanding things if ever needed

In Youtube the 5800x seems to have gotten a lot of stick for running hot and oth also praise for being a good overclocker?

Prices are still pretty similar, but I don't know yet wether to opt for 5800x or 3900x...
It seems 3900x has more computing power in total but is worse in power consumption, heat exhaustion and single core power?
Would a Noctua NH-D15 suffice for a 3900x? It should suffice for 5800x right?

To get the most out of either processor the best motherboard would be an X570 variant with a good cooling solution.
A B450 with decent VRM & heatsinks will do for the 3900X.

You should be saying - those interested in AMD Ryzen -.

Most issues arise with AMD & Intel when:
Motherboard manufacturers code BIOS outside of spec, don't provide adequate VRM delivery, etc...
End users alter BIOS settings in a way that is not compatible with CPU & memory.
End users use memory not on QVL
End users do not use proper cooling solutions (air or water) including improper thermal paste, CPU cooling mount or both.
End users choose the wrong power supply. Providing enough headroom for power spikes when system is pushed.
End users selecting the wrong motherboard or, not understanding how particular boards work.

Generally, it doesn't matter how many bits is the memory bus, but how much bandwidth it has. So a 192 bit memory bus can be faster than 256bit which in this case is true. 1660ti has a faster memory bus than 1070 and uses GDDR6 which is faster and consumes less power than 1770's GDDR5. 1660ti's memory bus has 288GB/s bandwidth and 1070's has 256MB/s. I would get a 1660 SUPER actually because that one has 336GB/s memory bus, still 192 bit, and it's just a little bit more expensive, whilst built on a newer 12nm process and consuming 125W instead of 1070's 150W which is built using 16nm fab process. 1660ti is using 120W. SUPER version is really worth it, if you can find it.

Memory bus speed is pretty much the most important spec of the video card, and it usually means the video card is faster than some other with less speedy memory bus.

Having said all this, 1660ti and SUPER both have more of everything than 1070. 1070 is just old and can probably be had for a good price. If the price is right [good amount less than 1660ti or SUPER], I wouldn't hesitate to get a 1070.

    Cheers!

I wouldn't be so happy if I were you because I've heard Cubase 8.5 is the most stable recent Cubase available. 9.5 can get a pass, too. 10.5 doesn't work on anything but Windows 10 up to 1809 and Cubase 11 work on Windows 1909 up. It's good to keep these things in mind.

Steinberg is becoming new Digidesign/Avid... full of that smelly stuff...

    Cheers!

    Thanks you for clarifying it.
But I haven't hear anything about Intel having issues yet.

I just read and article that about 9 to 10 percent of the 5000 series chips are bad and they are saying keep the box just in case.

Apologies @Futurewine for the off topic discussion going on.

Rumor posted by one system integrator that so far has not been confirmed either way. Thus rumor not fact yet.

Intel has & continues to have issues as well. Most of them were caught before release. Some were not. Thermal issues continue to plague Intel. Rocket Lake-S looks promising if all core sustained boost with thermals under control is achieved.

12th gen Alder Lake is still a big question mark as to whether Intel can achieve the promise of that design. End of 2021 should give us an answer barring any release delays.

Finally... keep in mind that no product is guaranteed to work out of the box. Having been part of a walk-in & warranty repair depot, I know this all to well. $2,000 audio amplifiers, consumer electronics & computers not turning on out of the box.
Anything that could not be diagnosed got the NWR or NFG depending on value or maximum warranty payout.

btw, it's like cpu is getting closer to overpowered for music production needs.. it's like golden age but still shortage with midi tools and supplements.. hmm.. :shalom:

I ended up with a 5900x and a rx 6800, Its overkill for music production for sure. Its hitting 4.8 on its own and that's good enough for what I'm using it for. The 5800 naturally boosts higher out of all the 5000's. Its a great processor. I got the 5900 just for the thought of trying to keep it for 8-9 years like I did the 2600k

Reading above I saw a couple things..
From my experience..Ive had no desire to overclock because the performance is up there right out of the box. I would rather have longevity over going balls to the walls, No need to push it yet.

Ive had zero issues with the MB but I bought one specifically made for the 5000's cpu.. out of the gate what impressed me the most is the onboard audio on the new MB. response and stereo separation was something I was severely lacking on my 10 year old MB
The MB I got was the Asrock X570 PG Velocita the tons of sata and thunderbolt capability.

There was a bad batch of 5900's that came out in Nov/Dec and it created alot of problems for people and most of the whea problems came from that batch. I'm a mod on a live you tube site for Falcodrin and its rare that someone has problems. Ive seen 2 people that had to rma.

Overall experience.. Great.. would I do it again.. YES. CON.. hated the buying experience..

If going Intel wait for the 12th gen which is next Dec.. The rumor mill is saying it a big change in architecture for Intel.. they are going to the chiplet design. 11th gen looks hot and decent performance but less cores (coming in March)

Here is a 5800x positive review instead of negative nancy Steve that is going to praise it when the price gets cut a bit.

why you hated the buying experience? @Voo #haha

Not sure if i regret though.. for just my kontakt needs.. should have pushed for max ram and do JunkieXL templates.. i came to know about that late, just after buying 3600x + 1660ti experience.. putting that on hate list experience too..

Stumbled across this article explaining the rumored failure rates from PowerGPU. No-one has been able to substantiate the claim.
The article gives relevant info on claims & actual failure rates for Intel & AMD.

Ryzen 5000 failure rates: We reality-check the claims - Problems with bad Ryzen chips may be overblown.
