It is with great sadness that I create this thread to announce that Rupert Neve has died. In the words of Vishal Dadlania a "profound loss to sound, to music, to technology, to innovation and to humankind." May his soul RIP.
I am fortunate enough to have mixed on his consoles and met him on several occasions, specially at the AES conventions. Rupert Neve was his only competition. His legacy will always live.

This is really sad. 82 years of sound engineering (died at 95) made him one of the greatest in this field ever.

    Gone but never forgotten.

    Rest in Peace, Rupert.

I just cut a track on a Shelford Channel an hour before hearing this. Whether we know it or not, we've all grew up on the 'Neve' sound. He will be missed.

    Sad news!

My very first professional record, some 17 years ago was mastered in part with a 1073, and from that moment on, I've had a special place in my heart for the 'Neve sound'. Peace be with you in the after-life, Rupert Neve.

    Damn :(

I'm not shocked though considering his age, but still so sad to see a true legend of this industry pass away.

I look at it in a different way than you do. Rupert took pride in his work. All of the company’s recording and playback equipment is crafted to uphold the very highest standards of musical quality. Keeping such high quality is expensive, and therefore, never intended to be mass produced with lesser materials in order to have them appeal to the general consumer. For that, there was Radio Shack. Now we have Behringer and plugins. Moreover, obtaining and protecting intellectual property rights is a strategic necessity for businesses as it prevents other from benefiting from your time, and effort. Anything to the contrary, as you imply, can only exist in Utopia. A different approach is to look at his inventions and technological innovations, from equalizers to moving faders, as having a positive impact on audio production for well over half a century. Indeed, we are talking about the father of the modern recording console here.

Yes we do as much as a keyboard player wants a Minimoog Model D for $300, and a driver a Rolls Royce for $15,000. However, quality materials and craftsmanship do come at a premium. Up until someone finds a way to spend $500 on parts and labor and only charge you $200 for the resulting product, we must settle for a U87 clone, a Behringer Model D, and a Hyundai. Indeed, your position that pros would say that a $200 U87 is garbage is misstated. The issue is not whether a $200 U87 would be treated as garbage by the pros. The issue is that pros know that a U87 can't be produced for less than $200, and therefore, they can't be fooled as easily as the general consumer. Simply put, pros would not EVEN pay $200 for some piece of crap pretending to pass as a U87 because it is cheap but because it is a piece of crap. List an original or well built U87 clone on Ebay or Craiglist and see what happens. How long do you think it would last?

    Edit: Look at this

I just want to remind everyone that this thread is in the Memorial section. A bit of respect should be shown. No one needs to reply to this thread. If anyone has any problems with Rupert Neve, I suggest that you start your own thread. Thank you.
