    If you are a Reaper user may I suggest the stock plugin JS Saturator. I use it as a default plugin on every track set at 75%.

    It's small, low cpu, has only one control, sounds like a tape machine to me. I don't even think about saturation anymore.

    Aside from stock plugins I'm still very much using iZotope Trash (first one, haven't used 2). It's like an everything included toolbox for saturating any signal.

    You get an input taming compressor, pre-EQ, various saturation/distortion options, post-EQ and a modelled delay line.

    Voxengo VariSaturator (one or 2 band) and FabFilter Saturn 2 (multiband).
    Sonnox Inflator is the easiest to use.

    Output Thermal is a scary beast!

    Yes, but perhaps not from Pro Tools, Cockos have a VST plugin as part of their VST pack that can execute most JS plugins, it's good enough for running megababy in a VST capable DAW.

    But then you're looking for a AAX/VST bridge to run the VST/JS bridge plugin :)

    The vocal sound in this track is also partly due to the vocal recording chain, and honestly not much more is needed, just small tweaks. The vocal chain for this song I belive was a Sony C800G into a A-Designs Pacifica (or quad eight) preamp, into a Tube Tech CL1B.

    Edit: here is the article that talks about the recording chain: https://www.prosoundnetwork.com/recording/its-not-over-daughtry

    Here is my list, that I use more then for 2-3 years.
    1) PA Black Box Analog Design HG-2 (timeless thing);
    2) Decapitator by Soundtoys (supereasy to use, and supergreat results);
    3) Kazrog True Iron (This one is SOOOOO GOOOOOOD);
    4) FF Saturn 2 (great tool, but easy to make some mistakes);
    5) Custom Chain in Guitar Rig 6 (just for fun).
    tbh, in my setup these guys works supergreat, and there is no need in something extra.

    IMHO: Decapitator is the best point to start.

    And after listeing to the Daughtry original & your mix, I pretty sure you need to compress much more. And work with double/back vocals more. It's not so much in dist/overdr here. :/

    (beautiful track, by the way). This may sound a little TOO easy, and a little wacky, BUT
    This: NEOLD BIG AL
    (new, from Plugin Alliance, and although you might think I'm crazy, consider that I'm 70, and have spent most of my life in Audio - mostly Tube and discrete components - no "Algorithms" that end up sounding tinny or flat, and no "fake-sounding" tube saturation): this is a serious piece of digital/analog gear, despite it's apparent simplicity. Read the specs. I have tried it on a lot of different types of instruments and tracks, and if you manipulate the 'sag,' pre-amp tubes and post-pre-amp tubes properly, you can get astounding, completely genuine analog sounds from from this: Sister Site 'mentions it' and also praises it - as do the producers who have used it:
    -Unique Harmonics
    BIG AL is a dual-stage tube saturator that offers a broad palette of marvelous sound flavors flowing from the interactive network within its transformer-coupled pre and power amp. *Based on completely novel circuitry and authentic NOS components from the 1930s, the one-off analog hardware has been exclusively designed for this plugin. (!)

    -Filter Freak
    BIG AL's frequency conditioning begins right in the EF9 preamp stage. The Low control is implemented as a Baxandall filter which allows adjusting saturation intensity around 100Hz in optional combination with boosting or cutting the bass at the same time.

    The High control is an additional EQ band placed in front of the preamp tube. Its peaking filter boosts or cuts high-frequency content around 10kHz which is essential for inciting or taming BIG AL's treble aggression potential.

    Onboard Mods
    A jumper matrix grants access to BIG AL's core circuitry: Emphasis Shift, Bass Compensater and Voltage Sag provide powerful options for making complex changes to the distortion profile on the fly by inserting or pulling a few simple plugs.

    The finishing spice is added by the AL4 power pentode and its output transformer, driven hot by the preamp stage. The result? A truly gorgeous kind of harmonic saturation that will always sound organic, musical, and bold.
    --You can see this is not a typical "fake analog smearing":
    https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/neold_big_al.html (aside from the 'try and buy' at the sister site)
    Just my humble 2 cents.
    You should try it. It may be just what you're looking for. Very best of luck to you.
