The pharell lawsuit was just a quick come up for Gayes' kid. (it seems)
But anyway, you have to love Bob James. Not just because of his music but his attitude.
And, as far as sampling dying, NEVER. It's the heart of Hip Hop. If it dies, the culture dies.

For me the most unfair and most ridiculus case ever was Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve.
Hearing about this was painful for me not to mention the band.

But They finally got their rights after 22 years.

It's always a matter of money, if you're rich enough to take the risk to lose, then you can start a battle.

The problem in those battle is that music expert are just here as consultant, but don't take the final decision. It was the same with Katy Perry's legal issue (with some random guy that I forgot the name) when she use a basic chord progression that sounds like another, with the same kind of sound (but was probably more inspired by Art Of Noise - Moment In Love). They basically say that a chord progression can be copyrighted (without the melody), which also open the door for a lot of legal battles.

At the same time, drum break that are sampled (and not replay), aren't getting the money they should get, at least for the mechanical/publishing copyright (that you avoid when you replay a sample).

I'm surprise that after those 2 case, we don't have a invasion of legal battle and copyright claiming about everything, probably because most label aren't that dumb and know that their own artist took inspiration somewhere and that if they can win big, they also can lose big
