So, today Reason Studios had a big announcement! You can finally use VST3 in Reason!! No, sorry. To good to be true. I'm lying. Instead, they started a subscription based model where you rent the DAW and RE´s (only from Reason Studio, not 3rd party) for $20 a month. You will still be able to buy the stand alone version, but for how long? As a Reason fan, this is the first time I'm really thinking about switching to another DAW. They just keep "releasing" stuff no one ever asked for. What are your thoughts about this?
what a nightmare model. you get to "peep in" to a daw/software, the second you stop paying you dont have anything. before you at least could keep a working copy, sure just under license but still you had something for your money.
Rent to use, you never end up owning it as they always offer the latest version. So you can rent for years and never end up owning anything except a hole in your wallet. It works for some though
No rent to own So you will forever need to be renting, or else you wont be able to play the track you made with rented Reason/instruments/FX. And for us that bought the Reason 11 Suite newly, this is like a kick in the balls. Now all my hopes are to R2R to release a working crack of Reason, so I don't have to worry that I never will be able to use my bought Reason when the company dissolves because they probably, in the near future, changed to only subscription based (since you need internet connection to start Reason). https://help.reasonstudios.com/hc/en-us/sections/360005244059
Well, at least you get a licensed version of the product, for third world countries - it's a good deal, but no one gives such an opportunity except splice
From what I understand, no one makes subscription based model better than Plugin Alliance. I don't have it myself, but from what I understand, you get a voucher (for the same amount?) and will be able to buy the license when the rent period is finished (am I right, you who know?).
now it was propellerheads turn but even presonus a company i thought was pretty fair has also started introducing their own piece of shit "sphere" ..all these companies are paving their own path to a graveyard killing all goodwill loyalty in their brands now they will undoubtedly focus development resources towards periphery addons, leaving us with just a "functional" core, far from what you could have expected if they instead had continued developing what people choose to purchase, a whole package daw. ffs there are enough new customers in every new generation to bring you new revenue through single purchased units specially if you produced one "perfect package". its then you get attention! and differentiate! and gain trust and goodwill, that means reputation, and sells. you even gain customers from other brands but instead all these pathetic greedy mofos have began speculating and started thereby their own race to the bottom . Really hope to see R2R version in AZ soon. Instead of giving the change to pay until getting a valid serial, no... Just go for the money. But not from my pocket!
I think its the start of the end of Propellerheads/Reason because... ... they just don't have the business mass to pull it off. Adobe and Autodesk (turnover some Billion $) are in a completely different league than Propellerheads (only a few million $), and there are very few real competing products (bc e.g. Autodesk bought anything getting dangerous for them) while in the DAW sector there are a lot of competitors with good/great products and a better approach. I believe that Reason has many old and loayal fans, but few new ones. Totally true! I don't use Reason a lot these days, its not my primary DAW anymore, but I bought every version from V1 (and rebirth before) because I loved the Propellerheads. When they started, they had a close connection to their userbase back then. All gone by now. Last edited: Jan 27, 2021
I think that subscription bait it's more like $20 for the "weekly sample packs". Most people who will subscribe to this more likely already own a version of Reason. So, IMHO, the grab here are the sample packs. At the end of the day, as time goes by, we are simply gonna have to get used to these subscription packages creeping up the music production field. It's almost inevitable now! PreSonus, Waves, Avid, iZotope jumped into this already. I won't be surprised to see N.I, Output, FL, or whoever else, join the party down the road. "Jumping to another DAW" just for this REASON? Nah, there should be a wait and see period man. I'm a Reason user. I'm not going to be signing up for it. However, I'm gonna keep using what I'm already using and take more advantage of them. Soon enough we will know if they will discontinue updates/upgrades for owners over the membership. For now, I don't see that happening but I could be wrong.
OK! I just caught that part from their site: "To simplify our lineup we will discontinue Reason Intro and Reason Suite—the software will continue to function, and you will still be able to upgrade to the full version of Reason. All of our Rack Extensions will still be available a la carte in our Add-On Shop. REs will work in Reason and Reason+ forever, including the ones you already own." Shoop! That may be a RED FLAG already!
It would be useful to see a league table over time for each DAW based on the "number of licensed users". I suspect (but I'm speculating) that the protection they introduced which has meant a cracked version hasn't been available for number of years has also had a negative impact on their overall number of licensed users. The new price model sounds like an act of desperation, and is probably not "cheap enough" to reverse their fortunes.
sure do that, but primarily i would really encourage everyone to 1- invest in you musicianship knowledge, and (within reason of course) detach yourselves from being dependent and craving latest fx mirages to cover up for lack of arrangement for instance 2- consciously start following/supporting alternative fair daw developers. And start thinking open source as a final future goal. it is possible! professional 3D modelers and designers have just managed to do that thanks to an amazing open source software called Blender, it suddenly started developing in a pace that in a couple of years is leaving behind the giant corporations. corporation that until now had the privilege of asking tens of thousands for subscriptions! so It is doable, but needs enough of a base, and that base hasn't really existed yet. but with all these recent developments we are seeing the need and therefore the base will rise in numbers and we will soon see open source projects that will send these smug greedy bastards to hell its just a matter of time, and not that long. just wait and see .
Note: I haven't used Reason in yonks, so my perspective might be skewed here. If I had to do a one-off project where Reason was somehow a requirement, then yes, this would be really cost-effective for a month or so. Anything outside that... not for me. Can't even fathom considering something like this.
If you see a DAW as an investment in money - and more important - aquiring knowledge and expertise, one needs to know, what he/she's investing in. Will the company exist in a few years? https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/propellerhead/company_financials
really interesting. and it goes to show that no-matter what area or industry capitalism is literally strangling society to death. why? because nowadays its all only about monetary speculation, there are no other values since investments are no longer attached to a genuine interest around the actual product sure, companies still start with people having great ideas but soon after in comes psychopathic often anonymous investors and investor-funds who don't give a flying fuck about the product or service and only dictate levels of revenue for their "loan". from there on it all goes to hell, for us, for the startup idea/product and for society in general. when its all ashes, the vultures jump ship to the next funeral leaving us/society to clean up the mess .
