Sure its possible. Any monitor can be used without a sub. Ive been mixing for 20+ years without one. The question is are YOU good enough to use it without a sub? Do YOU know your room well enough to handle it?
You can pick 10 different monitor types and theyre all going to sound different in your room then they do in my room, then they do in MetaCastles room. Whether they will work without a sub or not depends on where you are and what you are doing and your own set of skills and ears.

i just find it very difficult to read anything on a 7" monitor.

how do you use a small monitor if you don't hear the sub-bass frequencies? looking at spectrum analyzers and comparing with other songs?

so these monitors without a sub are a bad choice? "Frequency Response 42Hz - 40KHz"

ah.. it was a joke! i don't speak english well, please don't go off topic, thanks!

@Slavestate post have good points it depends first try and hear how the bass will resonate in your room from the speakers good flat headphones can help with mixing bass if kt sounds good on them imagine how it will sound on bass boosted headphones or speakers

    Yes. I'm using Adam A7X.
Put Metric AB to reference tracks before Voxengo Span analyzer. You will see where sub usually is for your genre.
I have a sub it's hardly ever on. Maybe for a final check.

Years of experience along with knowing my speakers and how they react. People mixed hip-hop/electronic music/etc for decades on NS-10s with no problems. You ever heard the low end that comes out (or doesn't come out) of an NS-10?

    No sub : no problem
And sometimes, it is worse with it
Because you need a WELL treated room (basstraps ...) to get the most of it

    On a budget ?

Monitors + flat headphones with extended range
And compare your mix to reference tracks on BOTH

Placing your speakers well is more important

I would also take the Tannoy Reveal 802 into consideration. They come with 8'' and as to my experience 6,5'', when they go rather low, they do it at the cost of low mids. Also a pair of Tannoy is ~ 80€ cheaper and they're still available at Thomann's

@MetaCastle @Slavestate @Jim Von Gucci @Pipotron3000 first of all thanks for the help. so with these monitors, comparisons with analyzers, good headphones "when can I afford them" and learning over time about these monitors, you say that I will be able to do it without a sub?

seems like a good alternative! which monitor do you use?

  18. I use Tannoy Gold 8 and they have a very open sound. Not as focused as my Neumann KH120's but a wider frequency response.

I previously used Yamaha MSP5's with a Presonus Temblor 10 and that is something you might consider.

Pretty old and unknown Samson Resolv A8. I had the 5'' and the 6,5'' before and made exacty the described experience.

Came into my mind first but they're more expensive even then the KRK.

I heard Kali LP-6 are really good and not so expensive, they should give an accurate image of low frequencies

I would prefer to use headphones as little as possible! "i suffer from tinnitus!" what would be the right solution in your opinion? 7" or 8" monitors and compare with spectrum analyzers, save for 10" monitors or save to add a sub?
