That kept me from using it, it looks complex to do simple sound design.

In 2021 most of synthesizers sound good. It's all about full options , to do everything in 1 synth. For example one of my favorite vsti is Spire, good sounding filters but I don't like build in effects. Another one is Serum, amazing tool , medium quality filters versus Spire (my opinion) , few effects are good .

It's true there are too many synths that have their strengths & weaknesses. Where one synth falls out, another one completes it. Using them together is key in my own humble opinion. But you also can probably cover alot of basic sound design with any synth you pick if you just dive deeper into it.

Options are great though so I end up just going with the former for certain tasks like Serum is a bass engine, leads with Spire and pads with something else entirely and so forth.

Surge sounds relatively good,it costs nothing and it is BUG FREE.
The opposite of some paid shitty plugins.Today i opened a track I am working on since 3 weeks and Massive X (legit and expensive) showed me the 'Init' preset.Hours of work for nothing. Thanks and good bye Native instruments.Hello freeware.

I know that feel bro !

About expensive and freeware. I'm not ashamed to admit that Im using cracked software, but at the same time I bought most of my favorite /goto plugins . I just want to show my big respect to developers. My cracked soft is plugins in which I'm not sure what will be used in a couple of months. I was install Massive X at release and I remove it after a week. My friend told me about free TAL Chorus, I test it and I dont like it.
Main philosophy of cracked teams are "Try Before Buy" . In my experience I can tell you that 30 days of demo is nothing, I never use one demo plugin during all 30 days. The shit like "init" preset can happen after 2 or 3 months of use.
The best option is Rent-To-Own system. I cant find nothing better at this time, cuz you can use legit soft and pay small cost for it.

Some companies won't even give you a month with it or will give you a limited stripped down copy so you never get to see what's really inside that way anyways. I get that's due to bringing the weight of the demo download down a bit but you're right you never truly get enough time to make up your mind.

I like to spend at least 3 months learning the damn thing inside out then deciding or going with something else when it comes to synths or instrument plugins. Probably a good month deciding fx plugins though. I only run a couple of light comparisons with other similar plugs I own to decide wether something is better & right for me.

I took a look at the code and while is above my head and free time seems to me not easy to modify.

I've been using Surge since 2006 or so. It quickly became a working horse as the layout and workflow is sooo clear and straight-forward. I also loved the Shortcircuit 1 and 2 samplers from the swedish coder Claes. I still use Shortcircuit 2 as it kicks pretty much all samplers, still. Then I heard rumours that Claes was moving to Germany to create a new DAW. That DAW was later released, called Bitwig Studio. :) As you all know, it also rocks!

It feels like I bought bitcoin in 2012 (with Surge), if you know what I mean.

    Changes in 1.8.1
1.8.1 is a point release to clean up a few bugs we found after 1.8.0 release, to add a few features we simply forgot to code, and to update and add content to the installer which people shared after the 1.8.0 release.

    The changes are:

    Bugfixes and Features
Handled UTF-16 paths for saving user settings, allowing users on Windows with UTF-16 usernames to update their defaults
Drag and drop of a .wav or .wt wavetable doesn’t reset oscillator type, if type is set to Window
The warning on Windows about uninstalled Lato font shows only once, not once every time the Surge GUI is opened
About screen actually mentions Surge Synth Team!
About screen on Windows shows “x86” instead of “Intel” for CPU
Modulation depth display and typein for tempo synced parameters is implemented now (as opposed to being just nonsense)
Subfolders in modulator presets are now listed first, before files
Dismissed the value display popup when toggling modulation assign mode on/off
Resolved Python with /usr/bin/env on Linux in the build phase
Fixed an occasional, but serious crash which would occur on slower machines when rapidly changing patches
Reordered and improved the MSEG segment menu
Drag and drop FX movement retains assigned modulation
Fixed a mis-drawn MSEG hover segment when scrolling horizontally
Added an explicit menu setting for touchscreen mode for Windows users (under User Settings->Mouse Behavior)
Avoided a floating point underflow which rendered MSEG S-curve deforms incorrectly when Deform was a very small value
Failure to load a .wav file will not rename the patch wavetable anymore
Fixed a typo which resulted in the Hard waveshaper sounding wrong in Rotary and Distortion effects

    Content
Added a bunch of modulator presets
High quality versions of all factory wavetables in Basic folder
Updated Jacky Ligon’s presets with new patches and CPU optimizations
Updated TMNG’s presets with new patches, CPU optimizations and cleaner wavetables
    Added wavetables from TNMG
Added patches from Stefan Singer (previously known as Stefan Hållèn)
Updated a single patch from Luna

This build only builds on Tune File stuff, so if this is someone's issue go for it, otherwise stick to stable 1.8.

I wish the developers add a filter FX.In some situations this would be useful.
