If everything is a lie why bother changing? I may be biased because I'm lazy as fuck...

'This or that sucks' never has helped anyone. Especially a maximizer doesn't have so many parameters so, a statement about what you don't like would be helpful.

ok lol i take that back, might not be true, but sometimes i do feel like that when i watch some tutorials showing a secret knob in fl studio that turns out is just another way to turn up volume, or when i see people making tutorial using fl 11 like why

yes. and it made me make an account here because this thread spoke to my frustration...

imagine, recently i encountered somebody wrong on the internet! he was arguing with me about the nature of what compression is. I was saying that it is basically a automatic volume changer, which to my knowledge is correct, but he was disagreeing and going on saying that it changes the "character" of the sound! as if you could use a more general, meaning-nothing, applies-to-all-plugins kind of term to describe what compression is! :dont:

You were both correct! But you are incorrect when you say it means nothing.
Over the years it has been realised that FET, VCA, Tube, and Optical all work differently and do give a different sound I.E. character.

This is at the core of many discussions, many of them pointless because there's no will to reason.
Technically a compressor is what you say (a dynamic range compressor) but the analog compressors (and in general analog gear) used since decades ago change more than that.
Some of the effects are pleasant, some are not but many people associate them with great songs so they defend 'em to death.

A super fast attack (ie, such as with the Bruce Lee VCA Comp) will flatten the initial transient thus changing the characteristic, of say, a snare hit. Combined that with a slow release, the original sound is very unlike what's coming out of your monitors and coming back into the light. Character morphed, more evenly leveled and now something different although one knows it's still a snare.
Most people never knew that Bruce Lee was an avid amateur audio engineer and that after he retired was to open his own studio. This is a photo of him using his Chi to dial down the output of his self named compressor.

    RIP

I agree, but to nitpick ...

even a simple lowering the volume of a sound is a change of its character as far as i am concerned.

so really I think it doesnt tell you that much. just that it is different.

but those salesman would talk all day about theirs "plugins unique character"

only when you start talking about the terms that have some kind of definition (saturation/distortion, added noise, etc ...) you start getting somewhere.

i get that a snare kinda sounds totally different once masters such as Bruce Lee use compression... but still why confuse yourself with with "character" it produces, then just call it what it is - a super quick volume change? why keep defending "the character"?

thinks kind of thing was confusing to me when starting out.

And I bet Bruce Lee is so fast he could simply use a volume knob on his speakers, instead of develeping his own compressor! Or maybe thats how he invented the concept of compression in the first place? who knows!

I get that, but we were referring to the original hardware and why they have a different character initially, prior to any plugin.

What do you expect, that they're saying our plugin has nothing new, or special??? They're salesman, they get paid for selling everything as the hottest shit on earth.

They are all the same Dr. Who snare hit but are processed by different kinds of charactor compressors, each one having a sonic personality of it's own.

ok boss,I don't like the too little number of parameters and I don't like the sound of the 'limiting' either.None of the different user profile are outstanding. They are even close to crappy given how expensive the plugin is.I got a suite of 9 iZorope plugins for $9 some months ago, including Ozone's maximizer!
Maximizers haven't much parameters usually, but they have a release time, different algoritms, dithering and oversampling options most of the time.

Btw you knew what I meant, come on bro...

You're talking about the Weiss MM-1, right? I found it pretty good but we don't have to agree on this.

You mean transparent, loud, and so forth? These are the different algos.

No adjustable release time, dithering or oversampling, that's right - and no gain reduction hold option.

And honestly, I didn't know what you meant, now I do.

Hi all, first post with my new account, had it one years ago but I didn't remember username nor email so I had to create a new one. @Blue You said that you don't like softube harmonic saturator but I found it good. What saturator do you recommend instead of it?
