I'm running High Sierra on my mid-2012 MBP 13 (i7, 16GB ram, 500GB 840 EVO) and all software and hardware (old and new) I need to use is still supported, so you should decide upon that factor too I guess

Mojave offers cool but not so useful Dark Mode, and Catalina doesn't support any 32bit apps/libraries, so breaks compatibility with most older stuff

 

So Downloaded High sierra with dosdude1 tool from here http://dosdude1.com/highsierra/

However the checksums for InstallESD.dmg and BaseSystem.dmg don't match checksums on this control page;

Strange...

If I check the version.plist file inside "Install macOS High Sierra.app" it says "<string>13.6.02</string>" I'm guessing 13.6.02 is the version number. However wikipedia says the last version was 13.6 and then there is various security updates, but they don't seem to affect the version number.

Perhaps it is better to download from the 2011 macbook in recovery mode?

 

Ok, seems i need to download sierra fist as it is not possible to upgrade directly to high sierra from yosemite

 

I'd suggest clean install IF you have a spare drive to backup your current system

 

My gut feeling about Apple M1 has been confirmed. Was sure that Apple did not release the M1 without extensive testing & plans to quickly address opportunities to improve usability, performance and user experience. Seriously thinking of switching to Apple next year.

Got hold of an installer for High Sierra with correct checksums thanks to @tzzsmk

I'd like to add in case anyone else has problems with expired certificate for installer, making the installer not run.
Changing the system date in terminal did not work for me, so I had to delete "InstallInfo.plist" from within the installer.


These are the steps

Step 1. Go to your Applications folder.

Step 2. Find the Installer for macOS High Sierra in Applications folder

Step 3. Right click on the installer and click “Show Package Contents”.

Step 4. Click on folder named “Contents”.

Step 5. Click on the folder named “SharedSupport”.

Step 6. Delete the file named “InstallInfo.plist”.

Step 7. Enter your administer password to confirm.

Step 8. Now open the installer for MacOS High Sierra again, it will run

 

Ten years is a bit of a stretch in computing: Even if you buy the cutting edge today, this will be kind of obsolete in less than five years.
I'm not saying that it's impossible to use the same computer for ten years but you will have to accept that whatever you buy today won't deliver the same level of performance in ten years, unless of course you are planning to use the very same software and OS.

If you want apples latest and greatest shit today you have mental problems, and activating adobe for free is the least of your issues.

Who the hell wants to pay apple full price but not pay adobe a cent?

Use it as an extremely overpriced paperweight/talkingpoint on the bookshelf and buy a normal computer, that M1 laptop is probably worth 5x more than a normal laptop with the same components.

As i said several times, M1 laptop is a TOASTER when pushed to 100%
It is blowing like an airplane.
And thermal throttling ruin the perf : at least 50% lost

It is easy to do a benchmark.
But real world usage will tell you this M1 laptop S*CKS !!!
And frankly when ppl talk about "future proof" when this laptop is limited to 16GB RAM, i'm almost rolling under my desk

in fact, my almost 6 years old main workstation PC has 32GB RAM and I haven't yet run into a workload which wouldn't be able to continue due to lack of RAM,

I don't know much about the tech (esp. build) part of comps so definitely not trying to be a smartass, as I will (hopefully soon) need all your help with a new one.. still my 2c:

(I) always buy/build a comp for specific program(s), not the other way around. Speculating whether (k'd) Adobe stuff will be available, while they're having hard time fixing bugs for current legit stuff is imo just.. speculating.

I've seen a guy trying AfterEffects on M1. It was fast, but like he said - 8(16) GB of RAM is exactly that much when doing RAM-preview.. it doesn't matter how optimized it is or whatever, when you hit the limit..

 

ah, but that's most likely proxy preview caching, due to computers being yet too slow to render video realtime,
if Apple claims are true, proxy caching might effectively become obsolete, or be performed dynamically across SoC including SSD, which itself might get close to RAM speeds to host caching itself
