That's exactly on point, but for most people it's fatiguing to be too scientific. It's all about everyone's individual impression.
The 770s likely seem to be his favs.
You know, the most accurate headphones are unusable for extended mixing periods if they're uncomfortable, the sharpest camera lens is useless if it's not in focus, and so on.

the m40x are even worst than the m50x, take a look at the frequency response graphic, why people talk so much nonsense?

 

Idk I didn't have many other options, so I went for the m40x, I never liked the Technics and the HD25 either.

 

I had the ATH M50x and used them daily for approx 5 years. I liked the soundstage but they broke too easily.
Then I bought the DT 770. Love the soundstage and build. Prefer them.

This guy had a nice headphones reviews and also preferred the M40's to the M50's.

 

I know this, I have access to anything I need (my job), the 7506's translate my mixes more accurately. They are certainly not the best sounding headphones, but, they do work for MANY people. But, people gonna argue. Do what you want.

 

Forget about the old DT series and Audiotechnica witch just enhance hifi loudness.
Try new AKG K371 best studio mixing flat headphone - translate well...

 

When I need flat response, I grab my AKGs which are generally more neutral than the Beyers.
But then I needed closed back headphones and listened to the ATH-M50X, the 7506 and the DT770, 80 Ohms version. Both the 32 and the 80 Ohms versions are quite bass heavy, you might have to use some EQ when monitoring with them.
Sound wise I would have given the Sonys an advantage but the 770s are definitely more comfortable except I wouldn't want to wear them at room temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius.
The Audio Technicas were out of the question because they were too uncomfortable, they might work for people with tiny ears though.

After 2 days of testing them out with almost everything: music I love, music I make and loops and samples I have some points:
Please take a note that Im not a professional sound engineer and I don't have such an experience as u guys, im just bedroom music producer

DT770 32Ohm: Everything sounds fine on them. Even my girlfriend take them and I played her some songs - she said very nice sounding, pleasure to the ears, a bit bassy. My thoughts are pretty the same. I Think everything is pleasure on them because there is a gap in MID range, they freq line must be like smile, like electro house producers when they boost bass and high freq on the master eq haha.
Im shocked that they are quiet for 32 ohm, MacBook Pro from 2015 has nice amped jack, because my another headsets sound so loud (all of them). When producing on DT770 I must use limiter on the master bus with gain +4-6db to hear it as loud as sony are.
Producing music can be fantastic on them, because they are more comfortable than 7506 and sound is much more like HiFi headset.

Sony 7506: Like my girlfriend said (she know nothing about music production) they are also bassy, but all the other things are so clear. She had in mind that you can clearly hear the hi hats line, percs line, bassline, kick drums. And I also think the same, they are GREAT for leveling, great for mixing individual sounds and for sound design. If you want to glue the tracks its more harder to mix it down than on DT770 because you still here everything so good, every track is separated in them so after 3 hours of mixing you are still angry because u are thinking that time: maybe I should change these hats? They don't glue with the other things well...
They are not as comfortable, after 30 minutes on them I wanted to put it off and take a break (but its not important for me when choosing)
They are great for low end mixing, because its easy to control the sub bass and kick drum, these sounds are so precise on them when on DT770 they sounds like "a little more release knob on the amp envelope on the sub bass and kick)

The ideal situation will be to have these 2 pairs at home always. And always check the mix on both of them. I think maybe I will do like this, because DT770 are great for overall listening and to reference it with another songs but 7506 are great for individual tracks and sounds, you can hear everything so so so clean

Both of them are not quiet outside. When I was listening to some tunes on dt770 my girlfriend were hearing everything easy staying 4 meters from me. I can't image why people say they are great for tracking

After Christmas time I will check that AKG's and Audio Technica's and another DT990, but If 32 Ohm's DT770 are quite I will definitely need amp for dt990...

You might want to check if you're not listening too loud, or if the earpads are worn out and not sealing well. It should be a nice, secure fit. Both are somewhat serious issues. It should be barely audible from outside, just a hint of high frequencies.

 

I think im not, it's 3/4 volume on MacBook Pro, maybe if lower, isolation would be better but I still think it's not so perfect, ears are fully in pads, no free space etc. But it doesn't matter for me because im not recording anything, this was my free thoughts :D

770s' bass is bloated as hell and it ain't good bass. There's also the Beyer treble which I personally despise with every fiber of my being. The're overrated as all hell and I genuinely don't get why. Keep the Sonys and remember that they're also a bit bright so you might have to tone down the highs in your mixes.

If you don't mind used headphones then get a pair of ATH-A900Xs. They're an absolute bargain at the price they go for. (120-150€)

aren't these considered "audiophile" headphones, meaning they are not flat response suitable for monitoring purposes like tracking, mixing and mastering?

I can also tell you my experience with my 'Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 Ohm' :

Its a good headphone, with a very nice comfort when you wear it. The parts for the headphone
are modular. So when a part is broken, you can buy it. that is a good thing.

I use my DT770 for Mixing and for hearing Music on the smartphone.

i find that it is a very good item, but you have to know that the bass response in the 'lows' and 'low-lows'
is very MUCH. its kind a boomy headphone, in a good way.

but one thing, that i recommend to people is that the 250 ohm variant is VERY QUIET.

For tracking loud Music the 250 ohm is too quiet for sure. And i find that for hearing music the 250 ohm is too quiet too.

I would buy the 80 ohm or even the 25 ohm variant, if i would buy it another time.

Another thing you should consider is, if you want a closed headphone, or an open, or an semi open.

The DT770 is a closed Headphone, and the DT880 and DT990 series are the open and semi open variants.
Just decide what Headphone comes into your choice. and then try to hear them in a store or by a friend at home.

In this entry-level price range: DT880 PRO > ALL.

I just received them as replacement for two faulty HD 650 (faulty drivers then sound leaning on right side, buzzy sub bass) I got from Thomann. It's a shame really the 2019 Edition are produced in cheap Romania, their quality standards have lowered big time but I guess that's why the price too (350). I no longer go with Sennheiser they're really not on par with the rest of the headphone brands lately.

Apart from being slightly less wide than the HD 650 (which actually is better for mixing) everything else is better with the DT880 PRO: the sound (the HD 650 is just too harsh in the mids), it's comfy (you can wear them 2 days straight vs. 10 minutes for the plastic HD 650), flat yet enough sub/bass for my electronic music, just perfect.

And I'm not even using Sonarworks (yet).

If you have more money to spend go for the 1990 PRO the drivers are even better.

Also make sure you have a good interface or if not headphone amp to make the most of it since those are 250 ohm.

Send the Sony's packing man, they DO NOT translate well for mixing no matter what Schepps or anyone says lol! They are fine for listening though! Sennheiser HD600 or 650's, much better IMHO. Alternatively, the Beyerdynamic DT-990-Pro-250 would be a better choice over the 770's.
