During mixing, there is no putting levels back once you send clipped material, it's already generated unwanted artifacts and you are left without much headroom for mastering engineer to put final touches

If you followed advises on setting levels, dealing with peaks and everything in last thread, you shouldn't have this problem

hi man, just lower the volume of the offending samples! find out what sound or sounds are making it clip and adjust the level of those-

this is the tricky part about mixing

alternatively, you can limit the offending samples, but the sound might be changed a bit if you limit it while it is excessivly clipping

ideally, you will never even start mastering until all the mixing issues are fixed.

good luck man, we all have to start somewhere!

A very simple way to make sure u have no clipping anywhere is start off with your kick drum...set it so that it's peaking at -9 or even -12 db..then mix everythinf around it...this way u can be sure that there wont be any clipping..clipping has to be taken care of during mixing...of u find that something is clipping...turn down the volume on all the individual tracks

Clipping is good. Shows you that your song is banging!!! :grooves:

Seriously though, as mentioned before just turn all the tracks down. Even dropping them all by 0.2 can make a huge difference on your Output Bus.
Remember, the listener has ultimate control over how loud your song is.

Better having them turning up the volume on your dynamic track, than them turning down the volume on a clipped compressed to hell mess.

If it sounds good quiet it will sound great loud. Watch some good tutorials a few times until you understand the concept. I personally would stay away from Sonic Academy tutorials (assuming you make electronic music). DMP (Dance Music Production) is spot on for begginers and a great way to learn the basics.

I don't exceed -6 on my master channel until I've cut all frequencies that do not contribute to the mix.

When you are bouncing audio make sure normalize is off.

Work in 24-bit @ 44.1kHz (or 32-bit float if you can)

You can up the sample rate if you like however at this stage I wouldn't worry too much about sample rate. 44.1 is just fine.

No dither, don't worry about dither at this point. Practice your mixing. None of your tracks should even be close to 0 while mixing.

Compression can be used to tame sporadic peaks that jump above your desired headroom mark (usually between 4-6bd BELOW 0)

Be mindful of resonant frequencies in your mix as well.

P.s m/s processing is your friend,

Learn gain staging. That's all there is to it. Get as good of a mix as you can, then master your track (yourself or a pro ME).

And write "should" if you mean it.

If your using cubase put the level meters to input (right click on mixer this will show the menu for the input) and this will show what channels that are cliping and then at the top of the channels turn the gain down 0.1 more then what is clipping. Example clipping by +5.0 turn gain down -5.1

In my opinion thats two ways to eliminate clipping:
    1. Multiband compressor - that is better than limiter because you have more control of your sound (more bands = more options)
    2. Limiter - thats a finality way, only if you have no idea whats wrong.

Generaly - the GROOVE and feeling is more important for me even than clipping

Yes Fuad gives you good tip

I set kick to -10 bass to -15 and never had issues with clipping because there is plenty of room for other sounds. And also set limiter in your master ch. to -3db

If bass or kick is not loud, turn up your monitors :bleh:

You are obviously new to this and haven't yet figured out what gain-staging is about. I figure your mixes sound a little "flat" and boring compared to your favorite artist's tracks, am I right?

I don't have time to read all the comments so I don't know if this has already been said but..
I usually put every track I make at about -10 - -15dB this way, you will prevent clipping and leave yourself lots of headroom.
In my opinion there's never too much headroom. You can alway make the track louder at the end by putting a good limiter on the master.
Or if you want it louder overall while mixing and without limiting it (prevent limiting while mixing..) I always put the plugin 'gain' on my master channel in Logic. It's under utilities.
Something like that should be there for every DAW though.

In a ultimate mixed down track necessity, Izotope RX2 or RX3 Declipper - nothing better on the horizon.
