i downloaded crystaldiskinfo. it doesn't show how many tb of data have been written, but what it does show is that 88% of the expected life has been used. i'm assuming that isn't really good. even though it says the disk condition is good.

Like @Smoove Grooves said, modern OS have TRIM enabled by default.

On MacOS X, I turn off Spotlight completely and use other tools.
On Windows, I disable the "NTFS last file access timestamp".

These two cause lots of SSD write operations so they're worth disabling IMHO.

More information can be found online.

XP doesn't do Trim, but Linux, bro... Linux can do everything Windows or Mac, plus. Especially when it comes to partitioning HDs, formatting, trimming, I use Gnome Disks [RedHat enterprise app for disk maintenance], and GParted for almost everything, even partition backup, but sometimes Clonezilla on a flash drive is just more practical. I am always more afraid what WIndows does to SSDs than Linux.

Regarding recommendations what you have to adjust in windows to work with SSD, the list has become short lately. Even for Windows 7. So for an SSD it is *advisable* to turn off Prefetch and Superfetch, Windows caching [in disk properties] which is absolutely unnecessary and dangerous in case of power outage, and possibly turn off automatic defragging, but do defrag it with Windows defrag from time to time [once a month or so], what it does is not defragging, but re-trimming... and that's good.

edit: for those who often compress and decompress archives like I do [GBs per day] it is a good idea to put the Temp folder on a HDD to lessen SSD wearing, and put the browser temp files there, too. You can change the Temp environment variables for OS and user in the Advanced System Properties. Regarding Firefox browser, it can use its own RAM disk when you change browser.cache.disk.enable to false [use about:config as address to get there]. It will still write some data to the system folder, but keep the pictures and most of the data in RAM. That's also good for speedy browsing.

Gosh, I forgot about "NTFS file last access". That thing is just not necessary and should be tuned off on all disks, unless you need it for some reason. [system admin?]

    Cheers!

Since we 're talking ssd endurance, here's some fun factor, the most ridiculous ssd drive today:
The new Intel Optane P5800X is rated for 100 DWPD. For those that didn't get it, this means 100 drive writes per day... The drive also comes with 1.5 mil. IOPS @ 4k random read & write, pci-e 4.0 interface with 7.2 gb/sec max read and 6.2 gb/s write. Largest capacity is 3.2TB (starting with a 400gb model) which means you can write about 2000 TB per week easily. Latency is rated from 0.006ms to 0.025ms depending the QD.
Obviously the drive is aimed at the datacenter market and not to us mere mortals and i read Intel promotes this as a write buffer drive to be front end to larger drive clusters.
Now some people need to understand the importance of pci-e 4.0. As opposed to its pci-e gen 3 predecessor, pci-e 4.0 is bi-directional which allows drives to exceed the theoretical platform's bandwidth limit when operating in mixed modes and the P5800X leverages this as in mixed workloads it goes beyond its read or write max operations, up to 1.8 mil IOPS.
The drive is expected to be more expensive than the already most expensive previous Optane P4800X. Given though it almost doubles performance in critical areas, i 'm pretty sure it represents the next high end standard for all the other vendors to beat.
And of course i wish i could buy even a 400gb drive, i'd be happy until pci-e 5 arrived.
    Cheers mates.

One very useful tip for you would be this: install your best Windows [LTSC?], then install VirtualBox and another Windows which will be virtual machine Windows in it. Adjust the VM Windows to taste, make a snapshot of it, exit. Now every time you want to experiment with software, malware, even with viruses, just start the virtual machine Windows [takes a couple of seconds to start from a snapshot] and play with it, ruin it, do whatever you want to it, then close and check "go back to snapshot 1" [or whatever you called the snapshot]. That way you will never have to reinstall your main Windows again, and you can test any software you want without bloating or ruining your main Windows. I suggest you use it for browsing, too. That way you don't need an antivirus, and you just generally don't need to worry about anything while browsing... With VirtualBox you can also experiment with various operating systems... like various Linux distributions. Like Debian, perhaps.

    Cheers!

i built this computer in january 2013. it has been my primary computer all of these years. it has been turned on every single day from the day it was built. sometimes for 12-16 hours per day. never failed me. the drive i referenced above has been my system drive from the very beginning. i'm probably going to build a new one in 2021 at some point, and then this older one will be used only for connecting to the internet.

Yeah, it's taking the uptime of the drive and reporting on that. As with anything IT, a good backup and you are fine.
Disk monitoring is always good. I check my HDD's report every other day and the SSD farm weekly. Once they get an error I rip them out.
I've disks that have crazy uptime and one reports 378 TB in writes :| But it's green and it'll remain.

what bout that performance optimization in samsung magician , does someone use it ?
seems to me it could be the only reason to have this app running everytime from start up ..

I use it but I don't think it does much, the default settings seem to be fine.

I think the biggest reason to use Magician is to check your over provisioning settings and getting rid of that if it's set up. But you only need to do it once so there's no benefit in my mind to have it running all the time.

There's a very interesting video about the possibilities of PCIe4 now that includes communication between CPU/GPU/RAM/SSD and even Ethernet 10Gbps. High quality geek shit

    Si mi querido amigo.
I 've been watching Liqid rise the past two years or so. Their ssd implementations are insane - like 8 x 8ch controllers in one pci-e device hitting 35GB/sec lol. What's more important is they use off the shelf controllers, like a Phison ssd controller etc etc, but they put their own tech in combining a heap of these in a single device that only the fastest of the fastest machines can leverage. Great sht bro. What i find important is that a little bit of such tech, sooner or later, may find its way to the desktop or HEDT so us mortals without thick pockets can afford buying a piece of gear that may very well change our workflow for the better.
    Cheers mate

You basically have to create a single NTFS partition BEFORE installing win, getting rid of System Reserved after is a bit a pain in the ass.
-Download Gparted and create a boot USB key with Rufus, OR
-(easier) search for AIO Boot and install it on key, search and download WinPE 10 Sergei Strelec (english) and integrate it on AIO boot key, you'll have more than enough tools to work on partitions.

i used to use ubcd ultimate boot cd
but this one has alot more WinPE 10 Sergei Strelec
    thanks for your help:wink:

    @itisntreal
W7 had less bloatware and telemetry packaged in there.
And if new software works on W7? It's a no brainer.
I use both in a VM on a Mac.
W7 loads way quicker than 10.
